Actually, if you know that you're moving/leaving far enough in advance, the kids MIGHT get a kick out of watching the bidding on eBay of something you sell of theirs! But then you might actually get some good conversations about what could be donate-able because of what kind of item might be best appreciated in that way versus something that someone who collects things might pay for something and why. Once the wall that's coming down comes down, do a big old mural, preferably have me help you do one based on a paint-by-number painting like I did with mine. Then looking out those windows will be kicky and cute and fun like you're on the set of a play or something, and then do some cute sheers or vintage curtains or something. Do a search of "Curtis" here on Apartment Therapy and you'll see what I mean about a mural. Seriously, there are so many different kinds of scenes, you could really pick from a bunch of fun ones. Seeing things like THIS is why I'm so glad I have a new computer. Because not everything can be sufficiently breathed in and appreciated on a smart phone. This is so luminous and beautiful it makes me smile really really big. Thank you! Claudia's Cosmopolitan Co-op House Tour |

Sometimes when you say "Mommy make it stop" you stop it so completely dead in its tracks that it's just not funny. There are always things that I would do slightly differently, but I so very much understand the need to calm things down from that busy-ness in that first photo, that it really doesn't bother me at all that they stripped it so much in the "after". Once the owner eventually heals from the PTSD that living with the "before" is bound to have inflicted, they might warm it all up a tiny bit more. I agree that there is a lot of this style of furniture out there and that it's hard to make it look modern, and that this is a success. FURTHERMORE... to the people who really do find it offensive to paint wood, the wonderful thing about wood is that if someone one day finds one of things pieces to be so wonderful in a wood way, they can eventually strip it and find that beauty that means to much to them. I've done both -- painted wood and stripped wood -- and different pieces need/want different things at different times, and sometimes the current treatment is a great way to keep furniture in use and in circulation and off the burn pile or out of the landfill! There are SO many things I can't stand, but paint painted over the edges of tiles over the years to where they end up being about a half-inch over them? Inexcusable. I don't care whether it's a rental or owned. What can you do? If you can't stand paint stripper, use nail polish remover, and only do a little bit at a time. Ew, I Can't Stand That! I love it. I've had a lovely peach-and-black bathroom for 8 years or so, and I worked it to a froth in a lovely period way, but seriously, all the tiles matched itself, and there wasn't peach and pink alongside each other, so if it were me, I would probably have done the same thing. I used a very dark grey grout on the floor of my art deco period bathroom with a field tile that was a basket weave that had black glossy tiles in the blank spaces of the weave, so my dark grey grout REALLY made the woven part pop, because the solid very-dark-grey border tiles also helped set it off. It was great. And seriously? I can't stand scrubbing light colored grout, so I REALLY love it. And so will my buyer. I will miss this apartment.. Pros & Cons: Dark Grout in the Bathroom |

If you had said orange Formica, I would have come over and ripped them out myself, almost! But what you have is good stuff and I would leave it and make it sing. Go to CB2 -- they have SO much cool stuff, and a look of it is either orange or would look good with it. What Should I Do with These Crazy Orange Counters? Good Questions |

The change is stunning. I love the darker stain on the wood, and I love the white. You made the house look historic and modern all at the same time. You manage to remove what seemed to be a dated version of new construction. SO good. SO SO SO good. Before & After: Linda Welcomes Style to the Entryway It All Started with Paint |

I have to say that when I painted a whole room with a pattern to look like wallpaper, I used matte finish paints in Benjamin Moore's Aura line, and seriously, they really are matte, but they truly are scrub-abble. Paint Finish Inspiration: A Gallery of Moody Matte Walls |

I just love it. I like the crisp white along with the dark stain. It's a brilliant right-this-minute combination and a great way to NOT throw out the baby with the bathwater, which is what painting the whole thing might have been. And yes, you can see the mid-century flavor peeking through in a good way. Pat yourself on the back -- a LOT. You did a great job. Well-conceived, well-executed.
