I don't understand why the dishes can't be washed? Especially if there's a dishwasher. Put the dishes in, turn it on, take the dishes out. Am I missing something?

Was this the only house available when you were looking for a rental? I ask because I wonder why you'd rent a house with a kitchen that you so obviously dislike.

Why do you feel that bold stripes are only for a boy's room?

First of all, I love the remodel. It makes a wonderful difference, and the bathroom is very light and feels more open now.

However, at the risk of turning the whole AT world against me, I do have to comment on one grammar issue in your commentary. You write, "The artwork was created by myself using paint chips." The use of "myself" here is incorrect. It sounds like you created the artwork without any help, which may be true, but I do not think that was your intent. It is more correct to say, "I created the artwork using paint chips." If it was your intent to let the readers know that you created the artwork alone, you could say, " I created the artwork by myself, using paint chips."

I know a lot of AT readers don't care about grammar. But, using good grammar ensures that what you write is correctly comprehended and is easy and enjoyable to read. And, I think that anyone that writes anything surely has that goal in mind.

The black doors are so striking. I'm thinking of painting my interior doors black, and I love to see examples. Every time I do, I'm more inspired.

Re: the landing strip. Why do you need something for important mail before you file it away upstairs? Why not skip the step of letting it sit by the door, and just file it away upstairs?

I guess I don't really get the concept of a "landing strip." It just seems like an excuse to clutter. How much mail do people still get? Since almost every bill can now be paid through the bank, I only get maybe one bill in the mail each month. Magazines are easy to put on the coffee table or bedside table, or wherever you read them. Junk mail is immediately tossed.

My keys stay in my purse, my purse goes in my bedroom (with my shoes) my coat in the closet. I don't see why people need all that junk right by the front door, so it's the first thing anybody sees when they enter. It's not hard or time consuming to put stuff away.

I don't know... I guess it's just me...everyone else seems to think it's a great idea...

I've been an AT fan since it began, and I have to say that I am so tired of all this clearing out, straightening up, cleaning and organizing information. Is it just AT fans, or is the whole world just a chaotic mess?? Why, oh why, can't people get rid of the junk that holds them down? Why is it so hard for people to throw away things? I just don't get it.

I have so little patience for all the whining and hopelessness brought about by stuff. If you don't use it, get rid of it. If you haven't worn an article of clothing in a year, give it to Good Will. Do you think you'll forget your children were babies once? If not, then throw out that baby junk. Go through the mail every day and get rid of the junk mail immediately. Wipe out the sink after each use, and it will stay clean. Put your clothes away, don't put them on the floor. Don't kick your shoes off and let them lay right by the door. Carry them to the closet. Dust once in a while. Wash the dishes every day.
None of these things are painful, or hard, or particularly time consuming.

Devote another whole month to this?? Guess I'll sign off until February, when it's safe to come back.

Thank God I don't live on the ground floor. Geez, you guys. Peeping is peeping, and it's weird no matter why you do it. Looking for people in their panties, or trying to see someone else's artwork...it's all a violation. And, people with open blinds are not "fair game". Get a grip.

I always wondered who bought those hideous magnets I see in tourist stores when I travel. Now I know.

I dislike clutter of any kind...but especially on the fridge. Don't have it in my house. It sets my nerves on edge in other's houses.

I don't see why a person would decorate an appliance. People don't stick junk up on dishwashers or ovens or washers or dryers. Why is it the refrigerator that people are so attracted to? Is it the size? That is the very attribute that makes me want have the fridge blend in as much as possible. Why make it even more obtrusive by using it as a place to hang junk?

Oh well, as my sainted mother used to say: The world would be a boring place if we were all the same.

The art looks way too high. AT has posted many times about the ideal height for artwork. Maybe review some of those...

The only other suggestion is some toy cars on the chair rail? That's it? Besides, if you ask me, that's just junk that will get real dusty over time.

I agree with the window covering and pillow idea. And, do the walls have to be so whitey-white? The white mats in the prints in the second 'after' picture don't add much.

The art actually does very little to spark up the room. There's lots more that could be done here.

I don't care if it comes from Pottery Barn or West Elm. Everyone makes mistakes. And, the Queen Captain's Bed is beyond hideous.

Cute place. Reminds me of me.

For years I decorated in a way that was very similiar - flea markets, antique stores, anything vintage, quirky. Then, one day I looked around and it just looked like junk to me. I couldn't wait to get it all out of there. Now, I'm streamlined - clean surfaces, everything put away, sleek furnishings and not many of them. I feel I can breathe again.

Not that their place isn't great for them, it is, obviously. Just thinking of how my own tastes have changed over the years.

That's what's so great about decorating...it can evolve as you do, and express who you are.

OMG, thank you, noell!! Imagine! Taking your stuff to your rooms/office/kitchen! Instead of just dropping everything the minute you come in the door. What a remarkable idea!

I am so glad to finally hear from someone else that does not have coats, shoes, mail, keys, leashes, purses, backpacks, etc. cluttering up your home's entrance. I have been complaining about these landing strips ever since I first read about them in AT. Obviously to no effect. But, I am very happy to know there are others that don't subscribe to this hideous, ridiculous idea.

These homes are the products of disorganized minds.

Falling for this kind of nonsense and pretending that it makes sense is also the mark of a disorganized mind.

Yes, and both are so over. It's so tiresome when everyone thinks they are so different and individualistic, but in fact they just follow the herd.

Thank God for thorndale and illestwifey. I get so tired of all the people who maintain they don't have time to clean. Or, who claim they have such busy social lives that they can't pick up a dust cloth. They are just lazy or disorganized, or both.

Everyone has time, as these two have pointed out. Whether you work or go to school, have children or not, have pets or not, entertain a lot or not. No one has to live with dirt and mess, unless he/she wants to. And, if you want to, just admit it.
