I would consider asking about the possibility of moving to a different unit. My upstairs neighbor just moved downstairs to a larger apartment with unexpectedly cheaper rent. You might be able to move right next-door with great floors with much less hassle than living in a construction zone (where essentially you would have to move everything anyway).

It wouldn't hurt to ask for either new floors or a whole new place.

Many thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I ordered four sheets from Broadway Paper. It is as lovely as promised and now I need to think up a project -- since pasting single sheets of wrapping paper all over my entryway is a bigger challenge that I think I am up for.

I second Lobo - I am sure you could hack some kind of alternate leg on the IKEA ps.

And don't be afraid to think outside the box - lots of IKEA furniture comes with the legs sold separately. Look at coffee table legs, wardrobe bases, even club chair legs there.

Hands down my favorite advice for curtains:

And if you browse YHL "how to" section they have plenty more to say about window treatments.

Good luck it is a lovely room already.

My jewelry is stored in the top two drawers of my dresser in about 20 teacups and saucers. I am sure this idea was either from Martha Stewart or Domino.

The insides of the drawer are lined with cherry blossoms from the Paper Source and the teacups were $.45 each from my local goodwill. It is beautiful, practical and affordable.

I have also seen a collection of teacups in a wooden tray from WestElm that was also nice.

Bracelets and hoops go in the cups, dangle earrings hang from the rims. All of my necklaces are on pins in a cork board. Also lovely.

Good luck,

Ooh a giant floor mirror would be lovely - especially if it reflected a piece of beautiful furniture or artwork across.

There are some at DWR, West Elm and IKEA right now - all price ranges available.

I also love the library idea!

Fun post!

Thanks for sharing Gretchen,

I am fine with the IKEA love. I think from the selection available you choose very well. Everyone is always saying you should wait to buy pieces that you TRULY love, but it takes a while to find them - and hey, sometimes a girl just needs a decent kitchen table RIGHT NOW.

Excellent paint choices I say.

My only complaint is that if you write about the view (and place the bed to enjoy the view???) I want to see that view please.

Oh I love it. So pretty and soft and comfortable. I agree with the others that you should experiment with a new arrangement. And I think that your fireplace is crying for a nice round mirror.

There is a woven one that is beautiful and on sale at Target right now. Or several at West Elm. And of course Overstock.

Good luck - post pictures of whatever you try please please.

I am often happy with Pier 1 and World Market for plain white servingware in interesting sizes and shapes. They are cheap enough that I couldn't care less if I need to replace them occasionally.

I think you could even have very good luck with carefully cut molding and ticky-tack or Museum tack. I have even hung photo frames with this stuff (light ones) and I have seen a lot of modern molding that is actually more like foam-core and super lightweight.

Oh people.

My favorite part of this kitchen is that it looks like every inch of this space is his - designed for him to cook. He picked what he liked, and where he wanted his bowls, and everything is right at hand, and I bet the color makes him smile every time he even passes by the kitchen.

This would never be my kitchen for many reasons, but that doesn't hamper my love and appreciation for this one.

Well done my friend.

These have been some of my favorite AT posts EVER. I am very inspired and plan to do some serious rearranging in my apartment soon!

Thank you for including all of the thought that went in to planning the makeover. And making it affordable and time friendly. I especially love that you tackled the whole apartment and not just one little project - but the whole thing is still completely assessable for me in my little budget-driven, time-crunched world.

Guys, if the landlord is running a credit check on the guy it sounds like he is actually following the rules and that the original couple was keeping things above board by checking with the landlord. How else would he have known to run the credit check.

I do agree that an in-person conversation with the landlord, plus as much pre-paid rent as you can give would be the way to go. If have a six-month buffer and then pay on time for six months that should be a pretty good sign.

There are so many flaky renters out there that you are going to have to prove yourself above the rest.
