Oops! Didn't mean to put the question mark at the end of my comment. Just to clarify, I don't like the Sex & the City characters being seen as real NYC women.

Also, love the bathroom tile!

So depressing that people in other parts of the country might actually think NYC women are like Sex & the City chicks?

Are you sure the wood floor doesn't continue under the vinyl?

Anybody who bought real estate more than 20 years ago in NYC made a good investment. I'm sure the West Village townhouse had a good return.

Also, it sounded to me that the only thing they renovated was the kitchen. Was I wrong?

Mostly, I don't like names that seem like the parents are trying too hard. I think people should choose a name that fits their child. And, one that means something to them, their family, their heritage etc... not just because they think it makes them cool to pick an unusual name/spelling for their kid.

My name is fairly unusual. Although, it is very popular in another country that has nothing to do with my heritage. My name was generally annoying growing up. I never found it on stickers, stamps or anything a kid might want to buy with their name on it. As an adult, I still have to say my name 3 times before people get it. Then, I have to explain I have nothing to do with the country my name is from.

Unfortunately, if your name has a strong association, it is a reality you have to deal with. People automatically assume I'm super sexy. Hahaha! No really, it's a burden.

It is seriously weird how intensely gender stereotyped marketing is for kids in this country. While the pink problem might be more disturbing from a feminist point of view. As a mom to 2 boys, I resent the limitations placed on boys interests and self expression just as much as those put on girls.

I let my 4 year old son pick his own bedding on a trip to Ikea. He picked a bed spread with pink, orange, red, and white stripes. And, I knew he would because he likes hot colors. I dread the day he gives up on what pleases him for fear of what others might think.

For now, he plays with his pretend kitchen as well as his trucks and trains. People aren't so simple as girls=pink dolls and boys=primary colors sports. Why can't we let them be their multifaceted selves at every age.

As others have noted, styles are cyclical. My husband likes to say "The 70's are so 90's".

Your parents stuff is not cool, because it is your parents stuff. What looks dated is everything from exactly the same time period, like a movie set.

This is a great room and really doesn't need that much. I think your headed towards an updated cozy library look, so I would keep going in that direction.

I would loose the black chair and coffee table and floor lamp.

Change the black shelves for white and make them go around the corner up to the window, either tall or the same height as the built-ins. Replace the desk with a round table in that corner--modern or transitional. You can keep a desk lamp on the table.

I think you could make the blue chair work, but it sounds like you want to have it reupholstered. Find a pattern that you love, but make sure it brings together your walls and the couch. You can also have a tailored slip-cover made that velcros uderneath, if you think something washable would be more practical for the kitty. Woolite makes a readily available foaming carpet/uphostery cleaner, if you decide not to reuphoster or to go with a slip cover.

Please take the skirt off the ottoman, but make sure the legs are in good shape first.

Get two good reading floor lamps one for the chair and one for the couch. Maybe add a side table, if you feel you need one.

Generally, I would like to see your colors integrated into artwork for the walls and in decorative objects on the shelves. I would also like to see less black and more dark brown in the room, like the color of your mirror frame.

Can't wait to see the after pictures!

You are very talented! So subtle and beautifully balanced. The dinning room is my favorite, but the bathroom is a triumph. Not many can work with what they've got to make a space look harmonious and intentional.

Sorry the Overstock Leann bed is ultra suede not leather. They do have leather beds without wings.
