I never by default just assume that all perspectives are from someone white, unless specified. I don't even consider the race, I just assume it's a HUMAN BEING. And in the case of AT, a human being interested in home decor and style. Each individual person is UNIQUE. If you can't see yourself reflected or represented, whose fault is that? YOURS. Because you are limiting what you see to the color of skin. You could see OTHER elements of yourself reflected in others, regardless of race, if you bothered to look beyond that. It would be just as easy for a white person to not see themselves reflected or represented in another white person. Because every single person is a combination of different elements. Race is only one thing. It would be the same saying that because I'm a woman, I can't see anything of myself in someone because they are a man. I suppose that would be the case if I didn't have the ability to think beyond the obvious, to see that it's just one single part of an amalgamation of countless other qualities about that person, some of which might be JUST like me. Or, possibly race is the ONLY thing I can see of myself in them. And if so, who cares. Just because two people share the same skin color doesn't mean they reflect anything of each other beyond a color. I can be white as another person, and still, by comparison, be so different we may as well come from different planets. I'm also a vegetarian, which is a minority. Does that mean I see nothing of myself in someone else because...they eat meat? I live in Baltimore. Does that mean I see nothing of myself in someone because they live in California? Or even Japan! I have had friends and even housemates of dozens of races, and I was always capable of seeing beyond whether they shared the same skin color as me. The race card always always a weak play. If someone is concerned enough to scour through posts, and then just assume for themselves that if race isn't mentioned, then the person is white, they are much too consumed with the issue of race, and will always find a way to feel alienated. Ultimately, if this keeps you from enjoying AT, then.... don't open it up and look at it. They are not obligated in any way to hunt out things to post based on race. Maybe start your own therapy - webpage or otherwise.

Agree. $150 for THAT is absolutely ridiculous. Are they made of something precious and rare? If so, maybe they just need to make some out of normal stuff and charge a tenth of that.

not sure how a hamper of any sort could make one feel like Jean Seberg. a stripey shirt and short haircut might more likely to work.

those in the know, have known for years that record players have a functioning place in the home. ikea's expedit shelf is the homes of a great many dj and record collectors. i have my vintage space age looking record player sitting right on top of it. it becomes a work or art or feature, instead of a dirty little secret.

i keep food scraps in the freezer or fridge until the trash bag is full enough to go out to the dumpster, which is maybe every couple of weeks. this keeps the trash from having any smell. with recycling, i'm not sure how people could generate so much waste that it needs to go out so often.

magazines really need to knock things down to an approachable level. i kinda thought domino was supposed to be more for the younger, don't make as much money, demongraphic, but i agree with some of the other posters. things like $1,000 sheets make me want to throw the mag across the room. but now, i won't have to.

i would imagine these are very inefficient. more of a luxury item. particularly compared to a normal radiator space heater, which you could also briefly lay your towel over to warm/dry it up. i can't imagine people without heat in their homes would be purchasing these, so if you can afford one of these, then why not just turn the heat up and/or throw your towel in the dryer for a minute. but if people have the money to throw around...

living in the city for many many years, i've found the best thing is a fan. i run it at night year round for the white noise, adjusting the speed depending on the noise level i'm hoping to cover. unfortunately this doesn't much help the bass vibrations thru my bed of the tv that my downstairs neighbor seems to only be able to watch if it's at top volume.

ps. adorable cozy kitty

it's not the chairs, it's the table. the color doesn't fit with anything.

i'm starting the new year with several money saving strategies. my main ambition is to start taking lunch to work, instead of buying it in the cafe every day. this requires new shopping and cooking habits, but so far it's given me a nice feeling of accomplishment. i also decided to started marking on a calendar when i spend money and what it was for. hopefully visualizing my spending will help keep in from running through my fingers.

for all those in apartments who put clocks in other rooms, or hit snooze half a dozen times....don't forget to be thoughtful of your neighbors who might be hearing it through the walls. i used to have a neighbor whose bedroom was above mine who would press snooze for a hour before he got up, and well before i had to get up myself. as it would wake me thru the walls, it was annoying as hell.

almost as bad as my downstairs neighbor who just this week has taken to watching tv below my bedroom at very high volume ALL NIGHT LONG. the bass comes up right thru my pillow. it didn't stop till 6am. i know because i was awake to hear it stop. don't do this to your neighbors either.

one winter I (a petite female) went out to shovel out my car from a big snow. a bunch of guys from a restaurant on the main floor of my building saw me starting in and came out to do it for me. in no time it was done, and i was very thankful. until i realized someone had scraped the shovel all the way across the the top of my fairly new car and left a scratch all the way. :(

one of my friends has, on more that one occasion, shared with me (or should i say "us", even though it's only me?) how she (should i say "they") would redesign the spare (much smaller, only one window with no view) middle room and put a tv in there. when i (or "we") comment the new tv is in the livingroom, she (or "they") always says, "yeah, you (or "you guys") would move it to the other room". i'm (or "we're") guessing this means she (or "they") doesn't like it in the living room, or would rather sit in the smaller spare room instead of the spacious living room with three windows and a view of the city. but...that's where it's staying...because despite what guests think, *I* (or "WE") am the one (oh goodness..."one's") that has to live there!

otherwise, guest remind me (or "us") of how heavy footed (& handed) other people can be compared to myself (or "ourselves") and how much i (or "we) value the rule "put it back where you (or "they") found it.

of course i have a couple of pets, so perhaps they could be part of the me that is "we". maybe.

sincerely,
sybil
