They have three or four of those exact lamps at our local HomeGoods right now; it's somewhere between $50 and $100.

I've had my eye on that lamp from UO for a while; what do you think of it? Is it heavy enough? (I keep finding flimsy floor lamps!)

I like simple white bedding, so over the years I've sewn a number of duvet covers using 120"-wide cotton muslin. It's about $8 a yard, but it's less with a coupon, which makes it cheaper than buying one ready-made, and it's an easy afternoon project. I don't know if I'd want to sleep on muslin sheets, but after a few washings, the duvet cover is soft and lovely.

I call it "tonic," which is what my parents (who are now in their 70s and were raised outside Boston) call it, as does everyone in my extended family.

Cooking Light's Cocoa Fudge Cookie recipe (you can find it if you Google it) is absolutely my favorite chocolate cookie recipe.

I don't know where you live, but I happened to walk through the Anthropologie in White Plains, NY just yesterday, and this rug was on the floor. Even if it's not online in yellow, I'm sure they'll ship from a store.

Nope, sorry. After I turned 25, I vowed that I would never have friends move me again. I just started to have too much heavy stuff, and I worried that someone would get hurt, and I would feel awful. I've hired movers the 3 times I moved across state lines; for moving across town, I've rented a U-Haul and hired professionals to load and unload the van. Worth every penny.

(I do, weirdly, actually like helping people pack up their stuff, and I always volunteer to come help when people are moving. No heavy lifting for me, either, though.)

@mxjohnson: Is it sad that I remember that episode so well that I know that Lou hired Rhoda to decorate his apartment? Possibly.

I find myself loving the decor (and wardrobe) on the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

I have the same standard for home items that I do for clothes; I don't buy it unless I absolutely *love* it. It ends up being a pretty high standard; I don't take stuff home that is just "good enough."

I keep a list of gifts I've given (so I don't give my brother a flannel shirt every year!), and on the same document, a list of things I might like.

Even though I wish my parents and in-laws would stop getting me presents, they won't, and I'd rather they get me something I like (and that doesn't cost a fortune), then spend a lot of money on something I'll immediately give to Goodwill.

I'm eating the first one right now, and it is delicious! I halved the recipe and made them in an 8" square glass dish, and they turned out just fine. A new fall staple...

Definitely try the Ina Garten recipe; I've been making it once a week since Christmas, and it's delicious. It's even better with dried cranberries and pecans instead of cherries and walnuts.

Other than recipes passed on by friends, Ina Garten and Cook's Illustrated are the only sources I trust without hesitation; their recipes always work for me. Cook's can be overly complicated, so after a few rounds, I sometimes simplify.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who won't use Martha Stewart recipes; they are so often disastrous (and expensive!).

For the last 3 moves, I have rented a truck and hired movers by the hour to load & unload it (call around to local movers; they usually have a rate for 2 guys for a few hours). It's cheaper than hiring a moving company to do the whole thing, much, much faster than doing it all myself, and I don't have to worry about my friends killing themselves hauling my sofa down the stairs.

It took a few years, but my immediate family and closest friends finally believe me when I say, "I know you want to do something special to celebrate my birthday/graduation/engagement/whatever, but I really do have more than enough stuff. Let's just go do something fun together."

For everyone else, I just take the stuff to Goodwill and, if the giver asks (which hardly ever happens), I shamelessly blame my cats for knocking it over or throwing up on it. Then I say, "It was such a sweet present, but maybe, given those rascally cats, we should just go out to brunch next year."

Maybe it's because I didn't grow up with them, either, but I have to say, I don't love groom's cakes. It seems strange to have any kind of "theme" at a wedding other than the wedding itself; these cakes seem to say, "We're getting married, *and* the groom loves his dog/his car/hockey/whatever!" I just don't get it. I do love chocolate cake, though, so maybe I should lighten up!

The Derian items are _finally_ up on the Target site; you can preorder the pieces that haven't yet arrived in the stores. (They are also, hilariously, on sale on eBay for ridiculous prices!)
