Wow, there are so many fabulous ideas here! Thanks everyone for chiming in. I think the closet will eventually be removed. But I hadn't considered the privacy issue that @Mary B C raised. For now, I think I'll go with a combination of painting and mirrors to hide the doors. Considering that I plan to have a gallery wall on the adjacent wall, I can live with mirrored doors to reflect the gallery wall. I hope to update once I have the finished product.
