I feel the same way about ugly metal bracketing, though I did see one image of shelves where the metal brackets had been spray painted a glossy yellow. It made them look intentional, and a fun part of the design. Maybe that could be an option?

That poor textile pinned to the wall! Hopefully it isn't irrevocably misshapen by now. There are ways to have it on a wall that preserves the integrity of the piece. A local seamstress could surely sort that out for you

Quality items are worth saving up for. We save up to buy one investment piece each year, and after being married for 15 years, our house has lovely antiques, beautiful Persian carpets, some great artwork. We're still working on it, but it has been quite gratifying to buy and not be in debt, to have the time to really shop around, and time to figure out what we really want or need, and get the perfect piece

At home it's just my husband and I and a teeny dog, and we live across the street from stores, so we never need to stock up.

But a number of my friends do shop at bulk stores, for a number of different reasons.

A few are parents of families with several kids in their teens, who are the equivalent of a horde of locusts consuming everything in their path, esp. When they bring their friends over, or come home after hockey practice. It's quite astonishing to see the volume consumed by a few 16 year olds in a short amount of time.

The other group of friends shop, then split their purchases. That 48-pack of TP? Split 4 ways. Bulk pasta? Split 4 ways. They save SO MUCH MONEY!

The last is a friend who is retired and financially comfortable. She shops bulk, only to give away to charities, safe houses for women, food banks, etc. It gives her meaning and fulfillment to help out her community, and to be able to afford to do so. I'm grateful for the example of folks like her in my life.

Using the pharmacy at our local grocery store, because it's right across the street, prescriptions get filled while shopping, and the service is great. But yeah, it's pricier.

When the article says 'home', do they mean a detached house or any kind of residence? I am a little surprised at some of the pricing. I am in B.C., and in metro Vancouver the average cost of a detached house is around $1,150,000.00. A tiny shoebox studio is generally still over $250,000.00. =(

I like the point about using your best things daily. One designer lives this way (I forget her name), and her philosophy is 'everyday is all there is'.
Also, getting a dog was the best thing we ever did. Coming home to a creature that is ecstatic to see you no matter what crap is going on in your life is an insanely effective mood booster and smile maker
