When I first received my bread machine in 2003, I baked a loaf of bread every week. Now, I don't have the same counter space so I store it below the sink. Out of sight, out of mind. Your post has inspired me to keep my machine in plain view and bake lots of bread in '09.

You can now add meat scraps to the green bins in the City of Berkeley. This has changed the entire ecosystem of the green bin project in my complex. We had a lot of maggots and aweful smells this summer. The project has been cancelled.

For my part, I hope to save my "soup broth" vegetable scraps in the freezer (a tip from a friend) and add tea/ coffee grounds directly to the garden.

Rosenzweig 2008 and Rosenzweig et al. 2006 found that light colored surfaces are effective in reducing surface temperatures, especially in settings with a lot of existing dark colored surfaces, but where there is more available sidewalk space for planting, street trees are more effective in reducing surface and air temperatures. I am studying the "million tree planting initiative" phenomenon. Los Angeles and Sacramento, California and Denver, Colorado have made similar planting commitments to NYC.

Whytephoenix: I have forgotten the type of lavender I planted but I purchased it from a neighborhood nursery specializing in dry garden plants. I will search for the lavender species you suggest.
