Tie between:

1. The uhaul ran out of trucks, and we had to scramble (b/c it was Boston on Sept 1st when the entire city moves) to find a minivan and my father lent us his pick up truck, to move 4 people. We had to be out of the old apartment at 8am and couldn't move into the new apartment until noon, so we had to start taking runs across the city at 6 am, leaving our stuff on the sidewalk with friends to watch over it until we were allowed to move in.

or 2) The time I got a horrible flu the day before moving, and thankfully my brother and friend did all the heavy lifting (in a snow storm!), but after they left I was in a new city, bedridden and snowed in for 2 days, without anything to eat or drink (although I was so sick I didn't care).

In our bedroom, we don't have enough room for a bedside table, so we've hung an ikea shelf, which holds my glasses, a lamp, and books.

It's a great solution if you're tight on $$ or space (or both)!

@patfm:

It's really easy to pain wood furniture! You will definitely want to sand it. I recommend buying a power sander. (You can get one for about $30 at home depot. It'll be much easier with a sander, but will take a long time if you do it by hand, imo.)

For my projects I prime (1 coat), paint (2 coats), and then polyurethane (1 coat, 2 on table surfaces). (Make sure you get a polyurethane that is made to go over paint.) If you don't poly, then whatever you put on the table will likely stick, especially in humidity.

If this sounds like a lot of work, it's not! You could easily do a kitchen table over the weekend!

I know this is a little thing, but I always strip the sheets and put them in the hamper, and fold the blankets when I stay over someone's place.

I think the trim is the most glaring and most dated, so put your energy into that first. I think the stairs look lovely, and won't actually feel dated once the trim is brought up to speed. Same goes for the kitchen.

In general I am a big fan of approaching projects of this magnitude in stages. So trim first. Once you've done that, you'll be able to tell better what you'd like to do first.

Good luck!

Yeah, that living room looks bigger than my entire apartment!

Edit, edit, edit. This is the hardest part, but also the most important.

I love the idea of tiling this with large-scale, natural looking tiles.

I definitely would get rid of that navy color, and paint the walls and fireplace the same color. Painting the brass black is a great idea, too, because brass is definitely dating.

I voted for the green velvet because, if that's what you like the best, then go for it! But if it were my chair I'd go with a bold geometric pattern in blue.

Wallpaper behind that murphy bed; it's screaming for color! You have a good foundation; so go out on a limb with some accessories!

I think this is really cute; I like the floating boxes. I agree that some texture/color in the background would be great, and I also think that a third box on the bottom would balance this out nicely. Great idea!

Ugh! What is with AT turning books into a purely design element? Your bookshelf is sucha bold statement about who you are and what you like to read/would like to read.

Fake books? That says you don't want to read a damn thing, but you hope people think you do. And covering a real book so that it looks like one of these fake books?

Some people really love books for the sake of their being books. So, no, I don't want to color coordinate my bookshelf, or wrap my books in paper to hide what they are, or clutter my house with empty boxes that look like books! I just like to buy beautiful bookshelves, and store my library on them.

Please change the tune, AT.

Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | How To: Personalize Your Dorm Room

Almost all dorm rooms require that you keep the college furniture in your room. I highly recommend you organize things in a way that you can fit one comfortable arm chair, preferably one with a fun sense of style.

It's incredibly challenging to create a flow of conversation in a dorm room, because the space is small and your furniture options are limited. Also, it gets old having to do EVERYTHING from your bed. All four years of college, I had different arm chairs and it made for a cozy room! My roommate and I always got compliments on the fact that our room didn't feel like a dorm room, and I attribute that primarily to the arm chair.

Also, tapestry's are a great way to add a bold statement of color. I also would suggest staying away from traditional posters that everyone in your dorm building will have. Try to find something a bit off beat, and if you can stick it in a cheap frame!

And do everything you can to reduce clutter! This was the hardest part for me. :)
