Re: bprophs' question. I find concert posters really tempting; when I picked up the aforementioned Dinosaur Jr. one, I looked at other work from El Jefe, and found several that I liked. However, I'm holding myself to a rule: only get posters from shows that I've attended. It's a little geeky, but I like being able to frame the poster with the ticket stub. I also don't go to a lot of shows, so I really like being able to remember the especially awesome ones that I go to.
I also like Ana's approach, with collecting everything from one band. I'm curious to hear how others approach this.

Anybody have experience with Flor carpet squares on top of wall-to-wall? I've been searching for an area rug, either 5x8 or 6x9; these could be a good alternative.

Thank you for this tip. I needed to crush about ten large plum tomatoes for chili and using a box grater really sped up the process!

I'm dealing with this dilemma right now, actually. The space in my living room could accommodate either a 5x8 or a 6x9, but I'm not sure just how much of a difference that one foot difference will make. As Taureg mentioned, the necessity of being able to put the furniture over the rug seems a little dubious. (Plus I'm putting a rug on top of wall-to-wall carpet - fun!)

Meg, kudos for deciphering the floor plan. Again, all that gray furniture isn't actually part of the living room. What you don't see is around the corner, where the actual dining area/office space is. I am coming around to the idea of putting down a smaller rug in the entry way. About the curtain, I'm not sure that I follow. Are you saying put up a curtain so that you'd have to pull it aside to get to the living area after entering through the door? Hmm, interesting...

Original question-asker here. Thank you all. I'll try to comment a bit on some suggestions.

Bepsf, a few things. The cable outlet isn't on that wall. I know what cable cords are, but the wall that the TV is currently on makes the most sense because it doesn't make it the first thing that one sees when entering the apartment. I had it there for a while and it just didn't work. I like the media stand that I just bought, and I already have bookcases (not pictured), so there's not much need for those. I also didn't include a picture of the actual dining area (my fault), but it extends farther into the apartment. However, the idea of painting an accent wall is intriguing.

Wc_canuck, I like the notion of box rather than floating shelves. Any suggestions for specific models, finishes, etc?

Kdkaboom, hadn't thought about doing a mirror, but that's definitely something I'd consider, as I don't have any mirrors, other than the one in the bathroom, anywhere in the house.

I do love the way it looks, but as a librarian (in case the username wasn't a tip-off), I couldn't do it. My books are in LC call number order (written into the first page - no spine labels or anything). Then again, my home library has relatively few titles (about 100 or so - had to scale back before moving cross-country), and I'm not sure that there's enough color contrast to pull off such a look. If you don't have an extensive home library, or depending on the type of books you have, this could look a little disheveled (sort of charming in its own way but meh). However, as a kid, when I had a lot of series paperbacks and different books by the same author from the same publishers, I frequently arranged them by color.

Lived in Portland a few years ago and loved Stumptown, miss it dearly.
