One of my fondest memories as a child in Spain (my father is retired Navy and we spent four years in Rota), was going to the department store in Puerto de Santa Maria (Hipercor, I think), and getting a rolled paper cone filled with freshly made potato chips from the vendor in the parking lot.

There was a huge kettle of oil and a slicing machine that would take a spin around the kettle as the guy would turn a crank and drop the sliced chips into the oil for cooking. He'd fish them out with a big basket on a stick and dump them on to a large metal table where another family member would toss and salt them to perfection, before rolling a cone of brown paper and filling said cone with a mountain of hot and wonderful chips.

The special prize was the few chips that hadn't quite crisped all the way, but remained slightly chewy.

To this day, the only brand of chips I've found that come anywhere close to those I remember are the Grandma Utz Hand Cooked Potato Chips. Just opening the bag and taking a whiff takes me back thirty years.

I've served them roasted in tandem with pears to go alongside a nice leg of lamb. There were no leftovers, if that means anything. :)

I don't think I implied there was anything wrong with beer can chicken... I'm a fan, for sure.

Based on the images, it looks the magic arm is detachable. It seems to clip over the end in the handle area.

This also appears to follow the same theory as the beer can chicken rigs you can buy for $5 at Walmart, only with more elevation and a horizontal attitude.

Sorry, guys... this is full of fail.

I'm thinking ice cream sandwiches made from this and two of the bacon & peanut butter cookies from Joy the Baker's site... we'll call it The Elvis.

Glad to know Target carries the flour sack towels. :)

Flour Sack Cloth is another good option, and can be found in sizes around 30" square if necessary. I keep some for use in the kitchen as well as for sweat rags when I'm working in the yard. Some grocery stores will have them in the cleaning section with the sponges and whatnot. Most recently I picked up a pack from Bed Bath & Beyond. Amazon also has plenty.

I'm a recent convert to Google Apps for Domains and I've warmed to Gmail's interface (after reskinning it with Gmail Redesigned by Globex Designs).

I started trying to be crazy accurate with labels and then decided the give up on them. A message only stays in my inbox until I'm done with it, then it gets archived. If I need to find something later I search for it. I had already given up on multiple folders a few years ago when I found Lookout for Outlook.

The only major issue I have now is I wish that Gmail would allow me to edit the subject line of a message I've received. As others have touched on, the conversation feature of gmail (which is slick), but my main gripe is that I'd like to correct insufficient subject lines (as I was able to do in Outlook).

Great post. I'm new to the more exotic cheeses, so this was timely. Also, great tip, Jooleeyet. I'll keep that in mind when I make my New Year's Tortellini Soup next January.

I think we need to define what we're cooking here. Starting from room temperature makes sense with any sort of grilling endeavor, but the frequent flipping advice is suspect in my opinion. A seriously thick cut shouldn't cooked on super high direct heat anyway. A reasonable 1/2" to 3/4" steak (as pictured above) shouldn't take more than a few minutes a side anyway. Chicken (even thick pork chops to some degree) on the other hand, sure... flip all you like.

Does sangria really need to be reimagined?

There are few things finer than sitting on my deck with friends during the hot Virginia summer sipping on a glass of ice cold Carlo Rossi Sangria. Screwtop, baby, screwtop. Plus, you can do fun things with the jugs when you're done.

If I was closer, FTF, I'd be down for helping you polish that off.

The igourmet link is actually $9.99 for a 8.8 oz block, not a pound. Looks delicious, though... may have to find some locally.

Seconding Synergy... I've been using it for a couple of years and truly love it. Development seems to have died off, but the latest version has been pretty stable for me.

I'm really surprised this site is getting so much free press lately (or are they paying for all these posts?). I'm sorry, but with web security being what it is, as nice as the idea sounds, this just gives me the willies.

Besides, there are plenty of free alternative desktop applications, not least of which is KeePass. Sure, it'd be nice to have access to everything online, but a site like this might as well have a bullseye on it.

Amen, brothers. I've recommended them time and again, and I'm sure people think I'm getting kickbacks or something.

I don't think I've bought a single cable from anyone else since I found them two years ago.

And for those who think the cable has to have a brand name on it, here's a great link (via The New York Nerd) to explain why the name on the cable means nothing.
