I use dry rice kernels. I put some in the raw sugar I use on a daily basis in my coffee too. Just a few kernels in my sugar dish, and it never gets hard!
Pulls the moisture out of the sugar, I guess. On occasion, you find a few rice kernels at the bottom of your coffee cup, but no problem there...

I have the exact same space in my (owned) condo and I didn't think too much about it - it is now full of shelves of varying heights to fit all my linens, towels, toiletries, toilet paper, litter bags, laundry detergent. Something that helps is that the stuff I pull out of the shelves the most are in stylish baskets so that you can pull them down fast and look at them, and the basket hides the not-so-pretty old sheets or sleeping bags. Below the bottom shelf, which is three feet high, I put a rolling three shelf cart with all my cleaning supplies so that I can roll it around the apartment as I clean and then roll it right back under (it also hides the stacked litter bags behind it - and looks nice in gleaming stainless steel to match my bathroom hardware.

I am surprised no one mentioned Russo's?
A 30-year old, Italian market that has now turned into a super farmer's market with amazing ethnic food (indian and asian peppers and veggies, bresaola and procuitto my italian friends swear by, french cheeses, and all the mushrooms or balsamic vinegars you could find in the old country). They try to only buy veggies from local farmers if possible (making the selection and quality much more extensive in our sadly short warm season) - but the prices are unbelievable. Last summer, I ate heirloom tomatoes almost every night for dinner with fresh mozzarella and sea salt and olive oil (all from Russo's)... and the tomatoes? less than $2 a pound!!

They sell seeds and flowers and plants too, and cut flowers and wreaths, and pots for your container garden. location isn't too great (you need a car) and it is super crowded, but it makes boston worth it. This market alone.

don't throw away the whey - it tastes good and soothing as a drink (add a little salt or honey depending on your taste).
or as an addition to pasta sauces, soups, entrees (sauces, etc.).

Really funny that you show that first pic in the story.
I have exactly the same paint color in my recently renov. kitchen and it is Ben Moore's "evening light". I bought it for the exact reason you state, and the reason I like the light in the evening, most of the time of the week when I have any time to cook. It is warm, inviting, and soothing, like a kitchen is to me after a long day...

i really wanted the jewelry hanger (tree) they had out of this woodcut material around the holidays, but I didn't want to spend more than $30 on what seems like a few layers of particle board - any idea where you can get this material, and if an Xacto knife or simple craft knife will do the trick? Thx!

Actually, Trader Joes also has a "center-cut", low nitrite regular pork bacon that has less sodium and less fat than turkey bacon (you have to check the serving size to compare) so I always get this one and indulge everyday!! It is only ~4 g of fat and about 70 calories for two slices of bacon. It also has less cholesterol than turkey bacon - is it added during processing I wonder?

The worst for me was a roommate who used to go into my room and steal my clothes when I was at work, and then deny it when I came home and saw her wearing them (she started wearing her coat INSIDE the house to avoid my asking about my clothes that she was wearing. I installed a keylock doorknob on my bedroom door which prompted her to ask me why I didn't trust her anymore?

Apartment Therapy Chicago | Good Questions: Where to Find this Smart Storage Piece?

I was wondering the same thing but for a gorgeous leather couch which my cat previously ignored, but now recently is using as a scratching post (despite having three other posts which he loves!).

I bought a suede slipcover bc I read that cats hate the feeling of suede, but I was hoping someone had an idea of a smell that cats hate or something that I could find in a lotion or oil to rub onto the couch?

Thx!

funny, i also love most of this house - the feelings and openness of it, really, but i don't like the library - looks like a long narrow corridor with bookshelves - the feeling i like about a library is being surrounded by books as you read - here you have to go elsewhere after you find a book. not my taste.

whytephoenix, I think the point may be for people without the cupboard space, where finding space for one towel is much easier than 5 -- also, much easier to use and hang up one's own towel than to use 5 diff towels.

i was wondering - where is that chair from in the picture? I tried going through the link to the house tour, but couldn't find it.

I am not even a smoker, but where do you expect people who do smoke to live? I completely disagree - if we can't even have our own habits in our own home, where can we? It would also restrict people who want to rent their place out after they move out. Trying to restrict that among renters would sure cut down your options of whom to rent to.

My building is nonsmoking in all public areas, which means stairwells and behind the back door, entryway, hallways, laundryroom, etc. but an old building (not concrete) and it works well. Occasionally I get a waft in my bathroom of the person in the unit next to mine smoking near an open window, but I find that to be no different (given that it is occasional) from the occasional waft of bad perfume or bad cooking...

My grandparents (heck! even my parents when they were kids) lived like this for decades! Either no or unreliable electricity in one of the biggest metropolitan cities, Bombay... Even today in its bustling advancement, it is still DARK at night - they turn off the lights at night - imagine that concept in our cities? I can't sleep sometimes because there is a construction site next to me with the lights on 24/7!!
Anyway, they bought only enough milk to drink daily (with 6 kids, there were no leftovers), and they had cool concrete storage closets (concrete can be very cool - believe me bc they don't have air conditioning so I sleep on it when i visit), and they get fresh fish and meat daily. I think it requires a change all around us - markets nearby, more affordable farmers markets where we could shop daily (the ones near me are so pricey, i have to shop there as a treat!)... And I live in a big city (boston)...

Actually they will ripen off the vine. I put about 40 green tomatoes with a few red ones in a paper bag two weeks ago in a dark cool part of the kitchen (under the dining table) and now they are ALL red!!
