They're lovely, but I would never do it. I have a black-and-white checkered kitchen floor right now, and while I find it totally charming, the white squares are a pain in the you-know-what to keep clean.

Oh, I like that! I love brightly-painted doors, but never thought of doing the edges in a different color. (Though rudebega's warning is a good one to remember, too.)

"If I love something, it works in my home, and is economical, I don't let the fact that it is a trend stop me from proudly displaying it then and probably long after the trend has passed. For me, it's about looking around my home and seeing things that make me happy, not what makes me look the best to my visitors. To each her own, trend or not."

I completely agree with sherbs.

The "after" is gorgeous, but like a few others have said, the "before" is more my style, even with the carpet.

-three of the light bulb sockets don't work
-several of the window cranks are loose (and when the wind blows they can be ripped free of their bolts entirely)
-the toilet is reluctant to flush unless you hold the handle down
-the fan above the kitchen stove sounds like an airplane taking off
-in winter, the entryway closet is about 15 degrees colder than the rest of the house
-the back door is extremely difficult to lock from the outside... takes four or five tries every time
-the garage door's motor likes to intermittently stop working when the weather gets too cold
-and my least favorite thing... when the window air conditioner unit was installed, one pane was removed, but the unit didn't fill the whole resulting space... so the remaining 9 inches is covered by nothing but sheet plastic held in place with duct tape. Classy.

When my siblings and I were kids, we each had ownership of our own box of ornaments. We added to the collections each year with ornaments we made or were given, and when we got married, we could take our box with us. So my husband and I have all mix-and-match ornaments on our tree! Not a single red glass ball in sight. ;)

The last two pictures make me want to cuddle up with a mug of hot chocolate and a book.... they look so cozy!

Yup, what mntwmyn said. Of course I like my place to look nice when I have guests, but waiting for "perfect"? Chances are they won't notice anyway, and if they do or it's something obvious, it can just become something to laugh/talk about.

No one is going to be thinking bad things about me because I still have boxes to be unpacked or art to be hung. And if there WERE people who would think badly of me, I wouldn't want to invite those sorts of people over anyway.

If it were my living room, then like veslabeachgirl, I'd paint it the green from either the rug or the pillow. Since you already have a lot of neutrals, it would add some color to the room, and it would pick up on the green details you already have scattered around. (Maybe she's right and it IS cliche, but I would still like it.)

So-- judging by these-- to make a room masculine, you need dark browns & grays, leather, and dark unpainted wood. (And some kind of shiny metal gets you bonus points.)

After a google search, here's what I came up with-- none are perfect matches, but maybe with some paint they could sort of suffice:

I love the sweater-knit pillows! And not mentioned above, but I've made the seasonal switch to flannel sheets. So cozy.

Freshly ground coffee every morning. Homemade bread (I've adopted that 5-minutes-a-day trick for bread). Books. Yarn.

Hmm. I don't actually HATE this craft, but it annoys me a bit: those decorative tea towels with the crocheted handle attached to the top, ubiquitous in old-lady kitchens. I mean, I get the purpose. I just don't LIKE them.

(I do, however, actually have one in my kitchen. My husband was working in a nursing home for a day and couldn't resist buying one from a crafty 97-year-old lady. Sigh.)

Blogs mainly... also etsy, and sometimes just a random image or description I come across unexpectedly will do it.

Yeah, I like the lamp, but I was also wondering if anything could be done about the too-obvious wire.

I enjoy organizing when I get in the mood to do so. However, having guests motivates me to straighten more than organize.

I get the organization bug when I can't find something... when I get a new something-or-other than doesn't have a proper place... when I'm inspired by someone else's home... or sometimes just out of the blue. (My husband might come upstairs from doing the laundry to find me busily emptying and reorganizing the linen closet without warning. True story.)
