In the age of Amazon and other online retailers, living in a small town is pretty great. Sure, not all small towns are going to have friendly, open minded people, just like not all big cities are paradises either (LA, NY, Chicago? No thanks, not for me -- not that I don't love a vacation to a big city, I just don't want to live there).

I like the lower cost of living and that I can actually afford to rent a small space to do woodworking in, something I never could have done in the suburbs of DC.

Sure I spend more money on gas, but when driving through the mountains surrounded by forests (instead of endless vinyl sided mcmansions), you don't seem to mind it that much.

BUILDER BEIGE WALLS! It's my own fault though for not repainting them by now. Stairwells seem daunting.

The tiles in the master bath (floor and shower) are this inoffensively hideous peach beige color.

Gross white carpeting in the bedrooms -- I want to replace all of it with hard wood flooring.

And also, I am laughing at this post because my partner and I are making a giant batch of kimchi tonight! We have no interest in the sports ball...

Best kimchi tutorial video on the internet. Plus she has a ton of other excellent Korean cooking videos:

I got a little creeped out when I first saw the picture because it is almost identical to the stairways in my house. Red oak tops with white risers and similar molding along the wall.

I have been thinking of how I can make these look better in my house as well. I think they might look better with solid oak on the stairways. This means getting some thin sheet red oak or red oak veneer and covering up the white risers. Also painting the walls a nice color would help as well and will be set off by the bright white molding edging the solid oak pathway.

Good luck!

Charlottesville is great. I've lived here for the past year and a half after spending 7 years in the DC area -- I don't miss it at all!

We have so many great restaurants around town and the people here are great.
