Plain bricks aren't hard to find at all. Any Lego store has a whole section where you just grab whatever color and sizes you like. The sets are a GREAT addition to plain bricks - and when your kids inevitably break the sets...voila...more plain bricks. My kids love sets but 90% of what they create is from their own imagination. They just don't need a new ad campaign to remind them. Only an adult would need that.

You can't make your bed comfortable for guests to hang out on. That's extremely awkward at best, and downright weird at worst.

I've got 6 kids- trust me, this iis a behaviour that can be changed.

1) wake the kid up at 6 am everyday, weekends too.
2) limit the nap to one hour
3) make sure he runs and plays a lot - especially in the afternoon.
4) bath then books and snuggling starting at 8-8:15.
5) lights out at nine.

Keep a very strict schedule similar to this and that child will sleep!

And the door knob covers or switching the knob so the lock is on the outside are great too. No toddler needs a lock on the inside anyway.

Good grief y'all. Wake up - the taxpayers bought that lame box of crap! Not some benevolent, baby-loving spirit known as "the government." I've got six kids and I buy their stuff, thank you. Local, state and federal government can mind their own business.
And anyone who thinks our taxes pay just for societal needs like police, fire, roads etc. needs to wake up. Ever heard of Solyndra? That's just one teeny tiny example.

@MAXB: "Big houses are depressing and stupid"

Perhaps you are projecting?

2 adults, 6 kids (ages 12,11,9,7,4,1), 4500 SF (if you include finished basement),north of the ATL. My cute little 4 y/o neighbor calls it "the fun house" - so not too depressing really. Loud, kind of messy, definitely a fit or two pitched everyday by one child or another. But more laughing than crying. We don't let this big house get us down.

You can totally decoupage a filing cabinet. Check out the blog mod podge rocks - IRS a great website and I know she's shown a decoupaged filing cabinet before.

Williams-Sonoma Everyday Dinnerware. I've had mine for six years and only one bowl (that I dropped on the driveway) is slightly chipped. I have six kids and a husband so these dishes have taken a beating. Good size (i.e. not too big - i hate huge dishes), classic design and affordable too.
The drawback - if you don't like white - then keep looking.

This will make the heads of most (not all) posters in this thread really explode. We have a TV over the fireplace, and we watch EWTN with our five children on said TV. And, we live in Georgia. And we have two Suburbans. And, incandescent light bulbs. Ha!

The good thing is, there is a great solution for those who hate the TV over the fireplace - don't put it there.

And, for all of the anti-TV people (e.g. "kill your television") - I'm curious...how many hours per day do you spend zoned out in front of the computer....

Most of us in urban areas drink and/or cook with treated sewage water. If you can handle that, you can handle recycled tp.

I have one - works fine - but burning newspaper makes a ton of ashes. Unless you either a) enjoy cleaning the fireplace or b) have a special fireplace vacuum...I wouldn't do it.
