For a second I thought you'd moved into my old apartment! We had the exact same problem. We laid down a runner, and my husband (a pilot) put up aeronautical maps of the eastern United States on the wall. We also were able to put a couple of low bookcases under the windows, but you might find that encroaches too much on the hallway floor space.

I second the recommendation for a good ceiling fixture - we had track lighting, which was ugly as sin but quite effective.

I confess, I'm a champion of mid-century pink bathrooms, and I liked it better before. Oh well!
