I've seen mason jar rings used as forms for frying egg-sandwich eggs. Lay them in the frying pan (lip-side down), grease them up, and crack and egg in. I've never tried it and I worry that the egg would ooze out along the edges, but it seems like a neat idea!

This is so interesting! I'm a florist, and recently have been wondering with my coworkers why the life of some soft-stemmed cut flowers can be greatly extended by cutting the stems and then putting them into a couple inches of very hot water (some of our vendors deliver the product this way). Dahlias in particular. We had also heard a fellow florist recommend dunking the whole flower head of a hydrangea in hot water as well, in order to rehydrate the bloom. Without a scientific explanation, we were all stumped as to why this should work when it seems so antithetical. I still don't fully understand, but I'm glad to hear that the principal works for produce as well!

I love hearing all your kind comments about the room being surprisingly un-basement-like. Thanks! I've lived in basement apartments for three years and sometimes it takes a little extra work to make it less like a lair, and more like a retreat.

I'd also love to give a little shout-out to my photographer friend, Kurt Simonson, whose photo is framed next to the bookcase. You should check out his work, he's fantastic!

@catspyjamas510 Thank you! It makes me happy too! I totally hear you with the bookcase. I've thought about redistributing my book collection so that it fills it up more evenly... what do you think of that? Should I give it a go? It's fun to play around with things you already have, isn't it!

Oh dear, I wish I could tell you the color, but it was already painted blue when I moved in. At first I thought it would be horrible! A cool color in a basement? Ick. BUT, it turned out to be a great neutral backdrop for all my furnishings and decor, and just pulled everything together! Thank you for your kind words :)

I simply do not understand the aesthetic appeal of pegboard in the kitchen. Maybe I grew up with that dusty, chipping-paint, rotting composite wood pegboard in the garage, full of patina-ed vice grips and rusty screwdrivers (a lovely thing in its own right)... but now I can't make the jump into the kitchen?

I can absolutely appreciate that it creates vertical and organized storage, but it's so hard for me to classify it alongside other, more universally attractive design solutions. And not only because I find the pegboard itself to be unattractive, but pegboard tends to display our cookware and utensils from their least flattering angle: greasy, burnt derriere.

And lastly (bear with me as I make my final argument against this design trend), the overall look of cookware on pegboard is somehow too reminiscent to me of a mish-mash of yardsale goods on a blanket.

I hope my negative opinion here is not taken as a personal insult to the author of the post. At the end of the day, I am pro-organization and pro-cleverness! And I cheer you, Tara, for revealing to us your scariest cabinet in the house, and then doing something to change it! Yay!

And not just foodstuffs now! I recently learned about a duo in Portland, Oregon that's just starting up a CSM (Community Supported Medicinals). Four per year (one per season), full of handmade, hand-gathered, lovingly assembled medicinals etc. to promote wellness and prevent illness. What a lovely application of the CSA model!
