I hve to say, I took out my weedy, sloped narrow front lawn last year and replaced it with native and water-wise plants, as well as stepping stones, and it was the best thing I ever did! My family struggled to maintain a nice green lawn on a corner lot, but weed seeds and trash were blown in by traffic.

I had a gardener strip the lawn off, till the dirt, and help with the existing sprinkler system. My husband and kids helped with the landscape fabric, plants and mulch. I planted in late summer/early fall so I wouldn't have to water too much, just until the winter rains arrived.

Everything is blossoming and I have only had to turn on the sprinklers 3 times this entire year. I just walk through weekly to spray the weeds with vinegar or pull them out before they get too big. All the neighbors have asked about how to do it as well, since the are tired of all their lawn maintenance.

I only keep a small amount of lawn in the back for the kids and the dog. My parents do the reverse - a huge front lawn for the grandkids and practically none on the back, just a patio and trees. I have lots of butterflies and lazy bees in my plants and everything blossoms with no fertilizer.

It sounds like a Seinfeld episode; I hope it goes well for all involved.

Besides all of the other great suggestions that other people have provided here, perhaps you could make a specific invitation for an affordable restaurant night with them - get them on neutral ground, so to speak.

Versailles seems stodgy in comparison - a centuries-old reflection of royalty's self-adoration. Murakami's work references the egalitarian asperations and hopes of the modern world. I like it.

Besides herbs, you can try growing edible flower plants, like nasturtiums or pansies. They really stun people when you decorate a salad or cake with them. Just make sure you keep your plants organic.

When you have an odd amount of foil at the end of a roll, save these to make all sorts of nifty helpers in a kitchen. Some ideas includes rolling some into a strip to use to truss chicken or turkey (if you have a longer piece) - which I have done. I have also used foil to tent over meat or pies/pie crusts during cooking. Also I have crinkled and then partially unrolled heavy dury scraps to use as a draining rack for fries foods.

Like others, I have a similar problem (kitchen vs. rest of house in hardwood). Do yourself a favor and keep the original wood. Use the clever ideas that others have suggested here.

I agree with Syllogi, and you can add the Hotel Maison de Ville Audubon Cottages.

Just a note of caution to those buying vintage sets of plates - older sets of ceramics may have lead in the glaze. Might be a good idea to get a lead testing kit to check if your set is okay...

Can anyone comment on the effectiveness of solar fountain pumps? I am considering one for my backyard, either the one in the picture above or one with a pump, cord and solar charger. I am unsure how big a fountain it can handle.

The Pottery Barn lamps are only for the base; you must purchase the lamp shade separately. Also, many of their lamps are catalog/internet only - you must pay for shipping.

I have noticed in past posts that some people really dislike books/libraries in a room. Maybe they associate them with an old decor style that doesn't appeal to them or maybe they feel that the owner is being pretentious by displaying their books.

Personally, I only save/display books that my family has actually enjoyed or use (reference), but if someone did display books just for decor purposes, what's wrong with that? People display art that they don't completely understand, use furniture with a weathered look that came from a factory, serve food to guests that was bought from a restaurant and not homemade. If an object gives someone pleasure, why shouldn't they use it?

California Pizza Kitchen used to do an excellent version of Potato Leek Soup. I used to have a recipe for it (from online) and it required some thyme and even some soy sauce to give it a savory depth.

Geez, I've needed this! I have tried other doorstops - too small, too bulky, just plain ugly - this looks like a beautiful, easy-to-store solution.

You know, make it a theme wedding - High school prom! You can send out cute invites with this theme and decorate the place with streamers, balloon and flowers (purple, if the fiance insists). Go with the decor, instead of fighting it. Also, like the many wise people who have already posted, remember the happy part of this day is your marriage, and the party is just the frosting on top.

Ideally, you can plan the holiday menu with plans for tasty leftovers. Sausage stuffing goes to stuff mushrooms later, sauteed carrots and mushrooms go into the soup pot with the turkey carcass and meat debris, cranberry relish gets used for cranberry orange cake or muffins, but rolls, sliced turkey can be used for a delicious sandwich like yours or a hot brown (need bacon and the delish mornay sauce) or just a great open face sandwich. Yum!

I confess, my family regularly goes to Black Friday sales! Why? Every one of you state excellent reasons for not going, but for us (sisters, sister-in-law and cousin-in-law), it is a time to hang out, coordinate shopping and just have fun. We compare shopping lists, receive tips from other people in line, help each other find the items we need and give out opinions on colors and sizes. About 10:00 a.m. we go to a great diner nearby and have a terrific breakfast and talk about our holiday plans.

Early morning Black Friday is perfect for us, because all of our other obligations (read: family) are sleeping off the previous day's festivities and won't need us for hours. To enjoy Black Friday, you have to really have your own reasons for going out, beyond a few sales items.

While the clock statement is not grammatically correct, I think many of you are wise enough to know that it was meant to convey the sense of casualness and resignation a person would feel with themselves. It is not a perfect world (especially if you are the type of person who is usually late) and the grammatical error was probably meant to emphasize that...

Of course, if you can't see the irony in it, then it is obviously not the clock for you.
