I will say, though, (coming from a Mexican) it is cheesy and almost insulting for them to have the Cholula hot sauce and that other bottle of hot sauce next to all the dia de los muertos, Virgin Mary, and Kahlo knick-knacks. It becomes less of an appreciation for Mexican art as a display of a stereotype. Justice & Ronan's Cozy Eclectic Abode House Tour |

I went to middle school with guys who were great at art and who are now tattoo artists covered in tattoos and none of their homes reflect "just a collection of rare flash, posters and fringe culture." What kinda stereotype is that? Justice & Ronan's Cozy Eclectic Abode House Tour |

Ditto to that! The mirror is great. I bet something like that (not do-it-yourself) is a small fortune. Kacey's DIY Decor Small Cool Contest |

Swanky, yes, but the rug (no matter where it's from) cheapens the whole look. At first I was reminded of the bedroom from the 2003 Peter Pan film. Julian's Room of Beautiful Browns My Room |

Such a clean home, but the current trend of appropriating indian culture is disrespectful as hell - they went all out on that. Amy & Corey's Sunia Home In Echo Park House Tour |

Kind of off topic, but since the article mentioned selling things on Craigslist. I'll just say it- I cannot stand when people on Craigslist call their stuff antique or vintage when really it's just an old worn-down p.o.s they're overpricing. Have You Ever Experienced Decorating Remorse? |

Especially since I cannot afford to just take classes for fun, I like to save up my money over long periods of time and then take a class that will benefit me and give me a skill that I can pass along to my children. I recently took some writing classes and earned my grant writing certification. I have my degree in English and Russian Literature, but that's as good as useless. There is a fashion program for continuing education at AI Chicago I want to get into- it's pretty much sewing (which I can do, but no more than hemming pants, making pillows, and sewing curtains), pattern-making, and garment construction which would be so neat to learn and is something I could use in everyday life and pass on. I am definitely not a fashionable/trendy person by any means. The Armchair Student: Learn Something New from Your Living Room |

my father had/has a collection of well over 12,000 records and that's not including his 45's and such. he kept them all in wooden crates stacking on top of and next to each other. he moved a lot- i don't know how he did that. anyway, his were always with the spine out and that's now how i do it. his collection was expansive and covered every genre imaginable from corridos and ranchera (we're mexican) to electronic, heavy metal, folk, punk (he was punk in the 80's...i was introduced to dead kennedy's, mdc, ghb, etc.. before anyone i knew in my age bracket let it be known they liked it as well), billy bragg was my first favorite recording artist as a kid...ugh, one day it will all be mine. The problem I have most with such a huge emphasis on this is that lots of parents are forcing their opinions on their kids. Kids don't give a shit about gender neutrality- that's an adult concept. Kids like what they like. I believe in letting them have options. If I were to have a little girl who liked pink I wouldn't burden her with how that's wrong and wouldn't she much rather have blue or yellow because it's gender-neutral. Expose kids to things you'd think would benefit them and in the end let them choose and allow them to trust in their decisions. To me, pushing your views on them is just as inhibiting as those damn stereotypes. Gender Gabfest: Hot Parenting Topic Best of 2012 |
