I am a fashion girl through and through AND short, and I take my shoes off in SOMEONE ELSE'S home. I don't need a warning and if height really does bother me I invite my friends to sit down and talk. My outfit will survive if I have to be stubby because having friends is more worthwhile. (: I have girlfriends who also LIVE in HIGH heels and if we want to dress up(heels and all) we go out~

I can understand the initial feeling of this concept being outdated, but I consider this idea to be a step IN JAPAN to help woman consider living out of the strict formal social codes of JAPAN.
Many of us take classes (dance, cooking, art, cosmetology) that don't come with amenities in our buildings, and the classes don't seem like they would be regulatory, so I don't understand the tone that some comments are taking.
This isn't a girl dorm, it's just an opportunity that some of the Japanese are taking to encourage their female population to become independent.

I would have loved to have played ANYWHERE as a kid.....or wish I had the option to play. Kids can have fun anywhere. I don't see this place as desolate.

i think it's the styling....if it was in some jonathan adler room with a beach chic vibe with this chair as the "special" item in the room people would probably look at it differently.

I like the chair purely because it ISN'T the eames chair.

I agree with undercover. I see why these photos are a great PEAK at how another culture lives and even maybe be happy that you don't live the same way, but to talk about how foul these places MIGHT smell and how it might be a health hazard to live in this space is downright ignorant.

I actually really hate the smell of potpourri ... and all the space some Americans supposedly NEED is ridiculous. That is why I love apartment therapy, they show you how to maximize your life and find home within a smaller space.

I really wish I had a more concise way of telling you of why I am actually hurt by what some of you have said.

i might be really far off...but doesn't it depend on how we are conditioned?

A bum would love to live in jail often to have a guarantee of food and shelter, and give up freedom and safety(not to mention drugs are easy to get in prison).

And i know that my family is happier in a "smaller" house than the "larger" we lived in before....

three different points not necessarily related.....but my experience has showed me that architecture can be your catalyst to what you are already experiencing, but definitely a big component to an experience and not to be so easily discounted...
