My first apartment shared with my husband had those kind of cabinets in the kitchen. To personalize the space, I purchased some removable/reusable vinyl "stickers" from Target- little birds in shades of blue and pink. I planned out how to stick them to the cabinets, in a way that wasn't overwhelming, and it looked pretty cute. We also had an open cabinet for the microwave, but ours didn't fit. Instead, we stored our small appliances there (blender, Foreman grill, etc.) and I hung a crocheted lace curtain to keep them hidden.

I REALLY like Audra's solution, though. I think her kitchen is cute. How would open shelving above the stove cut down on grease anyway? Instead of the grease getting on her curtains, which she can wash pretty easily, it would get all over her clean dishes. And it doesn't look like she has a dishwasher. I would much rather throw some curtains in the washing machine than hand wash my dishes- especially glasses.

@*SPANKY* it looks like the curtains are hung on a tension rod. That's the same thing I did with my little microwave cabinet. You just push the curtain to one side and it stays- no holding back the fabric to put anything away. :)

Before & After: Rental Kitchen Gets an Adorable Update

Unless our living situation changes by January, when I'm due, we have a full house! No spare rooms in which to create a cute little nursery, due to adult roommates who already occupy the second and third bedroom. This is a major disappointment to me, but I'm coping.

I plan on using an existing dresser as a changing table. (Half of it is mine, but I don't really use it so it'll become the baby's, and the other half is my hubby's.) Just add one of those pads you see all over. Over the dresser, I plan on hanging a wicker cabinet that I've had forever. I can put small items (such as pacifiers and hair accessories) in containers on its shelves. The dresser is super-long, so I'll have a lot of room for diaper necessities. We'll probably end up reorganizing our closet before the baby comes, so there's opportunity for better storage there. We don't plan on getting a crib until we have a spare bedroom, so the baby will probably sleep in something similar to a "Pack-n-Play" or bassinet, next to my side of the bed.

I'm trying to keep bulky baby items to a minimum, but some friends have given us some hand-me-downs already. We're more than thankful though. Just need to figure out what we really need.

I LOVE that "Lovechildbabymama" mentioned using the crib and changing table for her husband's art supplies later on. Me and my hubby are also artists and once our child is old enough, that's a great way to repurpose the furniture we would never use again.

That said, we don't even know if we're going to have a real nursery, as all of the rooms in our house are currently occupied by adults. Someone would have to move out in order for the baby to have her own room. We're in the master bedroom and plan on sharing the room with baby for a while. It'll be interesting to see how we improvise, but I totally agree with the comment "All you need for a baby is a boob and your bed".

Nursery Nevers: Products You'd Never Purchase Again Nesting a Nursery

I think the toilet seat changing is mostly a mental thing. I moved into my in-laws' old place back in May, and I would actually like to replace EVERY surface they had touched! They smoked in the house (which is a rental, btw) and had two old, dirty dogs that smelled up the place. We've done A LOT of cleaning, but I just don't feel like this is MY home.

I read this article hoping to find some ideas to help me adjust. I like the suggestion of having the duct work cleaned professionally. We've also been working on painting. It's a slow process, though, because I'm pregnant and can't really be around the fumes. I'm gonna try some of the other tips, too. And possibly change the toilet seat in MY bathroom! *ha ha*

I wish I would've had a rice cooker in my first place, too. I would totally avoid cooking rice before, because I could never get it right on the stove. Then I met my husband, who's part Thai and introduced me to the rice cooker. We eat rice several times a week. It's so nice because I really love a bowlful of brown rice with some veggies and tofu.

My blog is called "the doubtful pixie". I started writing over two years ago, just as a way to document my life and moving in with my boyfriend- who is now my husband. It became a lot more to me, though, as I learned what blogging could add to my life. I like to write about all sorts of things these days including music, art, my personal life, decorating, and Etsy.
