fabric panels on top of the carpet?

I think red also, it will bring the room together- I think a light rug would be off-putting (although match the walls) and, as said before, very hard to clean. If you are planning on using the fireplace, which I am ever so jealous of, I would say a darker rug is definitely a good call. Plus I love the masculine feel- kind of like an estates library. I don't think a dark rug would make it seem smaller but instead create continuity from the brick wall to the fireplace to the computer and chair to the couch. (and also quite cozy)

random idea that could be a good one- get a few yards of cheap fabric from a fabric store in the two overall colors that you are thinking of (aka light blue if you are thinking a blue pattern with creamy accents etc.) and lay one on the floor for a few days, and then the other. I've never done it but its the same concept as a paint swatch (except less work!) and would give you a feel as to how the atmosphere of the room would change (it wont stay well on the floor but it doesn't need to be there for long!)

side note- I would definitely change the couch decorative pillow to correspond with whichever rug you choose but that's just me.
