If you reread my post, I think you'll see that I wasn't saying the intent of the parents who created the costumes was to be mocking, I was saying that it is not appropriate to dress as a race or a religion. If I dressed my six year old white Christian daughter up as the Islamic Prophet Mohammed (who is an historical figure like Jesus or the Pople), I suspect you would agree that it was insensitive and inappropriate. Mohammed is a very sacred person to Muslims, and it is not respectful to "dress up" as him. Why then would we not afford the same respect to our Catholic neighbours?

I saw that photo and was visualizing neighbourhood pets licking the meat, bugs bbq'd onto your meat, and one of the chefs accidently stepping on the sausages.
That is one "cook-off" I would make a polite excuse as to why I needed to leave before they served the food.

That first photo looks like a room from a children's detention centre.

at jackied302- children (and adults) should be free to dress up and wear costumes for historical periods, occupations, fantasy characters, etc... but you don't "dress up" as a race- it is entirely inappropriate.

I am cringing in horror at the number of people who are defending the "not-indian-just-teepees-but-with-indian-stereotypes-and-headbands-and-beaded-necklaces" theme to this birthday party.

I have no doubt it was created with good intentions, but rather than defend the idea, why not aim to educate on why such parties/themes are inappropriate?

I'm not sure if it is just due to the all white in that room (ie paint, window treatment, beds, and floor), but to me, it is eerily reminiscent of a children's detention centre. Maybe more colour? Somehow the beds and wardrobe wall look very institutional.

I think they're all great... except possibly for the third photo, of which I cannot discern what they have created- a child's fort?

Looking at the pic, I am not sure a conventional sized sandwich would fit in any of the compartments.

i am a little confused by the third picture. when you go to wash your hands at the sink, it appears that you have to then kneel on the raised wood platform and then lean over in order to reach the sink (i.e. the sink is above some sort of bench on the left hand side, the floor where you can walk is on the right hand side). Maybe my eyesight is just bad though...
