Thanks for this post! I'm currently on the hunt for the perfect container tree (or two) for a patio that's surrounded by 2- and 3-story buildings.

This is depressing.

I have a staghorn fern that I really enjoy, but I would think twice about spending $100+ on this fairly finicky plant (unless you live in Florida, or unless the people from Terrain are going to come to your house every so often to care for it).

AMAZING! Places like this make me feel like I can't wait to get older. There's no way to have an incredible space like this other than to let it build up over time. And thanks for reminding us of what 'artist's loft' used to mean!

Whatever you do, don't use poison. You don't even want to know how gross that can get.

I've found that traditional snap traps work best. Quick, fairly clean, not as humane as no-kill traps but not nearly as cruel as glue traps.

And clean every day like your mom is coming over.

Thanks so much for this! I couldn't live in Philly without regular trips to the Wissahickon Valley (accessible by train from downtown!). And as I get older, I can't imagine planning a vacation without some nature time. Sometimes I fantasize about moving to the woods somewhere, but then I remember that I would need a car.

I'm all for renting OR buying, depending on your situation, but I wanted to push back a little bit on the "if something breaks, I just call the landlord and it's great!" statements above. You must have better landlords than I've ever had- mine often dragged their feet for weeks and then applied the quickest, cheapest solution. I was motivated to buy in part by a few 'last straw' experiences with landlords (I have a really disgusting story involving mouse poison if you ever want to hear it!).

I may be paying for my own maintenance now, but at least I know I'll get things done the way I want them done. Contractors can be a whole other headache, I'm sure, but so far I've gotten much better results and less stress paying for my own repairs and improvements.

So sorry you got that reaction from your social circle. Everyone needs to make their own decision about renting vs. buying- it's impossible to make broad prescriptions and assumptions about what makes the most sense for any particular person. Sounds like kind of a snobby crowd!

This post is making me re-think all the 'congratulations' I got when I bought my first house. New homeowners are (hopefully) just doing what makes sense for them, and renters are (hopefully) just doing what makes sense for them. No congratulations necessary (or maybe congratulations for home-buying AND lease-signing!).
