Definitely plated. There are etiquette issues (how big a serving am I allowed etc) and messiness issues with family style. Having said that I do quite like plating up the main section of the dish (the protein, the tart, the sausages, whatever) and putting the sides on the table. Additionally it's generally less fuss to serve up plated food and interrupts the conversation less between courses.

Sorry, so you had four different wines? How does that work? Did people wash their glasses out repeatedly or did they just make a choice and stick with it (and hope only a couple other people made that choice too?).

I only buy multiple sorts of wine for a dinner party if I'm switching from white to red between courses (and then, I guess, to a sweet wine for dessert). That way you can really enjoy a wine and have multiple glasses if desired and also don't risk having someone top you up and mixing the wines in your glass!

So are you suggesting that if a company invests $20 billion into inventing a cure for AIDs (which, by the way, is a completely realistic figure) it should proceed to give this drug away? A pretty poor way to incentivise businesses to develop a cure for AIDs, don't you think?

Letting Go: How Junk Food Made Its Way Into Our Home

There are 15 of us in our office, and we normally co-ordinate lunch (that is we leave to go buy some lunch together and those that have bought food wait for everyone else to get back before they start eating). We all eat together on a big dining table and chat for a good half hour before taking the last 15 minutes to call our other halves/read some news/enjoy doing nothing in particular.

Having space to eat together and making a point of being sociable at lunchtime is such a small thing, but it makes a massive difference to how effective our team is. It also ensures that everyone has time to relax in the middle of the day, which makes the eight hours we actually spend working so much more productive.

Oh for heavens sake everyone - it's a bit of fun. Clearly there are some people out there that have the money to spend 18k on a rug, otherwise no-one would be selling a rug for 18k. What's fun is when you find something that is basically the same for a fraction of the price, basically all the fashion magazines run identical features.

Maybe to satisfy all the kill joys three boards could be produced - one that's luxe, one that's identical to the luxe but cheaper and one that's shoestring but accepts you can't be *completely* similar at a lower budget.

I think what you and all the other volunteers (doing the decorating, serving and such) gave the happy couple such a wonderful gift.

My boyfriend and I have discussed getting married and are very set on the idea that we want to pay for it ourselves (if parents want to contribute or buy specific things like drinks or our clothes then that's awesome, but we want to be the main hosts). At the same time we want a nice, special wedding where we can invite everyone we want to and feed them and have a good time. I thought the only way for us to do this is to save save save, but your family have shown how time and creative skills can put together a far nicer wedding than money can buy :)

I know that there's a time and a place for an in-out IKEA job, but in my mind there are few pleasures greater than browsing around, checking out all the pretend homes and really enjoying the window shopping aspect of things.

@Griffin - this is my greatest sorrow. I've pinned some of her work and everytime I see it I have another google to see if maybe a secondary retailer is selling something or if someone is reselling on ebay, no joy as yet :(

A small (but significant) fraction of students in the UK host dinner parties - I often cooked a roast dinner on a Sunday and got my friends to bring wine and dessert to spread the cost.

There are a growing number of young people over here who enjoy good food and cooking, but are often on too tight a budget to be able to visit excellent restaurants so instead like to flex their culinary muscle at home. Hosting (informal) dinner parties is often the cheapest way of being able to meet your friends and have an excellent evening, and the chef often gets left with lots of booze and compliments to boot!

Harsh, much? If you actually watch the video then you'll see that whilst 'intelligent' people can figure out all of the ballot designs and end up casting their intended vote, ballot papers out to be 100% idiot and confusion proof. I shouldn't have to think 'should my tick go there or there?' it should just be obvious.

I liked the papers that boxed together the candidates name and the tick box, very simple and no having to follow an invisible line from one side of the page to the other.

I can't quite figure out a floorplan for this space - is it supposed to be a neat rectangle? If so the kitchen ought to be a lot larger/longer than it is!
