Great post! And let's not forget (shameless plug for my alma mater), the Institute of Design is still alive and well in Chicago as the largest full-time design-only graduate program in the US.

It's not espresso (pressure needed), and that blade grinder gives me hives. But as a bona fide coffee/espresso addict and hobbiest, I love videos showing different brewing techniques! Keep 'em coming!

I second the SAYL chair. It's half the price of the Aeron, cradle to cradle certified and 93% recyclable. I sit in it all day, and I'm no longer tempted to sit on my feet like in other chairs. And it actually looks good.

Ditto @travtastic. My grandfather used to catch squirrels and release them in the park for eating his sunflowers. It was more of a competitive sport between him and the squirrels, which, we're pretty sure, just came back hours later. Drown them and eat them? WTF?

Shoot, I really liked that store. But I have to say, I bought more at the annual craft fair than in multiple visits to the store. Best of luck to them and long live Renegade!

I had the luck to see these in person... and maybe that's what it takes. If you're in NYC, you must go! They're truly breathtaking.

Really interesting post! I'm afraid of color in my wardrobe (mostly black) and in my home (mostly white), but both would be 100% Anthropologie if I had my wish.

I second (or third or fourth) the questions about efficiency. If that $400 bad boy is going to reduce the amount I spend now on heating and cooling my apartment, it's worth it.

I'm a renter, so I can't weigh in on selling your home, but I have plenty of advice for out of state moves.

I've moved myself in a U-Haul from Chicago to Seattle, helped a friend move in a Penske from Oakland to Chicago, and then hired movers for my move from Seattle to San Francisco, all in the past three years.

Number one, I would highly recommend against North Star Movers/Moishes. They lost a box of mine, then found it after I threatened legal action, but it came back smashed to pieces, opened, and missing three cell phones. Super. Having done the U-Haul thing and hired movers, I have sworn up and down that I would NEVER hire movers again after that experience. When I moved myself, I took two weeks and turned it into a road trip, stopping at four national parks. That trip is a fantastic memory, as opposed to the living nightmare of damaged and missing stuff from North Star. Also, they made me get rid of all my plants (I had an extensive garden) because they wouldn't transport them across state lines. In the end, with the total of damaged and missing items, a Penske move plus storage would have been about the same price. Just hire folks to load and unload the truck so you don't slip a disc. That's the actual hard part, right?

If you DO hire movers, I cannot stress this enough, get moving insurance. I got $0.60/lb from North Star for my damaged and missing stuff. That's right, $900 of missing cell phones = $1.80. Get insurance!

I (majestic singular) use an old picture frame and an antique window frame with wire mesh (like a screen door) stapled to the back. I use little bent nails to hang my necklaces, and the earrings just hook right on. It looks totally gorgeous in my bedroom. I make jewelry, so it's art to me.

Here's a lovely one with lace from Etsy:

I like (but question validity of) this infograph from Good Magazine, which visualizes virtual and direct water consumption:

http://www.good.is/post/transparency-how-much-water-do-you-use/

It claims that hand washing uses about 20 gallons of water, whereas Energy Star dishwashers use about 4 gallons. This of course doesn't take into account electricity use or practicing better hand washing techniques (which I would love to hear, as I don't have a dishwasher in my apartment).

Great minds think alike! There's a post about green moving on boingboing today that links to an article on Good magazine's blog: http://www.good.is/?p=14933

Also check out RentaGreenBox.com, self-titled "the first zero-waste pack and move solution in America."

I think this is an amazing idea. I try to re-use my boxes for my frequent moves, but they always end up becoming moldy or rats' nests (true story). I have a friend who turns her cardboard boxes into furniture that she gives away when she moves, reducing the amount of furniture to move in the first place.

I love my electric blanket. It keeps me from hiking up the electric radiators to heat the whole apartment just so I'm warm in bed. Mine even has a pre-heat function that is perfect pre-bedtime.

I *think* it's not so harmful... compared to cell phones in the room, or off-gassing Ikea furniture butted up to the radiator. Now that I think about it... YIKES.
