I loved 2XL ... I thought I was the only person who used him to listen to 8-tracks, though!

My standard shameless plug: A few months ago I started a blog about less-than-successful Craigslist posts. It's called You Suck at Craigslist, and I hope you'll check it out and enjoy it.

Also, as you're searching for the good items, if you find any ads that deserve to be snarked at, please send them my way! The submission email address is yousuckatcraigslist@gmail.com, or is available on the site. Thanks!

I lived above a photo developer in the mid-90s. It was fine, except that their security alarm would go off in the middle of the night on a regular basis, and apparently the owner/manager lived far enough away that they didn't always bother to come in to turn it off.

The other thing is that I always suspected that we were paying for some of their electricity. I was gone for a full billing cycle once, and I unplugged EVERYTHING in the house except for the fridge, which I put on super-super low, and I *still* ended up with an $80 electric bill. (But that's not their fault -- it was the landlord's.)

There's also CLpic.com, which defaults to Chicago but lets you choose your area.

I've posted this before on Craigslist-related threads, so forgive my shameless self-promotion, but folks who regularly troll Craigslist might enjoy my blog, You Suck at Craigslist.

And as you're exploring via the picture interface, please feel free to send me bad listings you find!

I recently went back to see the house I'd grown up in. It's only one owner removed from my family; my mother was the original owner of the house and owned it for more than 30 years, and when she retired and moved she sold it to a family who sold it to the current owners.

They let me wander through the house, and as it turns out I was able to tell them a whole bunch of things about the house they didn't know -- like, for example, that my grandfather had built the porch on the back, and that he and my father together had built the beautiful built-in shelves in the den. (I was so happy to see those were still there and still in good condition!) Also, the shutters my mother had had custom-made for the strangely shaped windows in the upstairs dormers were still there as well.

They had redone the kitchen (which desperately needed it), but that was basically the only change that had been made. But it was a beautiful house to begin with.

I love it! It really brightens the space. Wood floors would look too monochromatic, and anything dark would bring the focus down.

So not fair that it's LA only. It's bad enough that I don't even live in a proper city ... I have to deal with crappy closets as well.

I like it -- I'd like it more if someone said that they did it that way because they were recycling siding, or something like that, but I like it as it is.

Also, I like the bright yellow -- and yellow isn't one of my favorite colors. But that house, with the smallish windows (especially on the side) would look awful if it was painted a dark color. As it is, with the different yellows and widths, it breaks up the large windowless spaces very well.

I was teaching at UIUC then. I didn't have a television, and for some reason I wasn't listening to the radio on the way in to school, so I got to school and taught my first class, completely oblivious.

At the end of the class, which I noticed was only about half full, some students came up to me and said, "Haven't you heard? They've crashed a plane into the White House." (Obviously a bit of miscommunication there, but it was still early.) At that point I said the one thing I've ever said in front of a student that I wished I could take back the moment I said it ... I said, "Did they get him?" (meaning George Bush. *cringe* )

I spent the rest of the day listening to the radio and constantly refreshing CNN and MSNBC websites trying to keep up with what was happening. I was in a relatively tall building on campus, and I heard low-flying planes around me, which was unusual since the radio was saying all air traffic had been grounded. I later found out that military planes were guarding the airspace over the university because it hosted a supercomputing center, or something like that.

The house across the street from us when I was growing up had this in their bathroom -- it was a commercial wallpaper, though.

I'm not surprised the cats avoid this box during the day -- there's only one entrance/exit and so with the dog around they may feel threatened.

My cats would never use this kind of setup, no matter how much I like the idea.

Not for all kitties, though: with only one entrance/exit some more skittish kitties might not want to use the litter box for fear of being trapped inside it.

My office is painted orange -- it was supposed to be a terracotta, but it turned out a little bit brighter orange than I'd thought. I really like it, especially since I live somewhere where the winters are long and dark; it brightens up the room quite a bit.

I get a lot of positive comments on it. I also get people who say, "I could never live with it, but it is bright!"

Chester, my first cat. He was being boarded at the vet's office, having just been diagnosed with renal failure, while I was across the country waiting for my grandfather to die. He took a turn for the worse and I had to authorize the vet over the phone. (Ironically, my grandfather didn't die until I'd returned back to CA.)

Moe, a 17 year old diabetic cat. We were both castoffs -- he was my ex's cat, and when my ex tired of me, he tired of the cat as well and left him with me. At the time, Moe had just been diagnosed with diabetes at age 13 or so, and my ex told me he "didn't care" if I put Moe down at that point. I didn't put him down, and once we got the diabetes under control he had a good four years left in him. He was Mr. Crankypants when he was younger, but I think he realized he was in the bonus round the last few years and was a complete sweetheart.

Here's to you, boys. I miss you both.

I was there for a conference a few years ago. I saw a gorgeous photo opportunity and waited for twenty minutes hoping that a guy who was just standing in the walkway, not moving, would leave! I finally had to take the picture because I was going to be late ... but it still turned out to be a beautiful picture, I think.

I keep thinking I'll get ambitious someday and photoshop him out of the walkway.
