I can remember moving as a child and my mom's mother and aunts descended on the house to clean, move things in and put liners on all the shelves. My mom and aunt did the same for me when I moved in to my first place.

Needed a new front (security) door on a 1920s rowhome. Of course, it had to be custom built for the odd sized opening. Ended up paying about $1200 for the custom door and installation - AND Home Depot did a crappy job and the woodwork around the door had to be replaced within a year.

When I moved into my studio, I agonized between buying a bed or a convertible sofa/bed. I have not regretted my choice of the bed yet. I do much less entertaining here than I imagined and love waking up in a real, comfortable bed. THe close friends that I do invite over don't mind sitting on the bed to watch a movie :)

I fly a few times a month and am a chronic over-packer! Usually, I'll pack a few days early so I can unpack everything the night before and take out the things I know I won't need. I also pack my outfits in layers, lots of cardigans and suit jackets that can be dressed up or down and try to limit myself to 1 pair of black shoes and one pair of brown. I bring a lot of day-to-night dresses - extra points if they don't need ironing. I travel with a laundry bag so the dirty clothes don't get mixed in with the clean on the way home.

Space bags and the rolling method only work for me on the way there - on the way home I can never get things back in the way they were. I usually try to leave at least 25% empty space in my suitcase to accommodate anything that I've accumulated during the trip.

I always pack the things in my carry on that would be the hardest to replace - jewelry, makeup, bras, shoes, etc.

Anything I don't use daily gets put into under the bed storage boxes.

When I finish a book, I immediately post it on to get it out of the house.

Shelves above doorways - my "linen closet" is really baskets on a shelf that sits above my bathroom door

Multi-functioning furniture: My sewing machine is built into a side table, and my ottoman hides all my sewing supplies inside. It also happens to fit perfectly under the sewing machine when not in use.

And my "cheat" - I bring off season clothes home to store at my parents' house until I need them again

too little counter space in my teeny studio meant choosing between the microwave and a toaster oven. The toaster won a place in the kitchen. I haven't missed the microwave; if anything it's made me think more about the food I put into my body - I rarely buy frozen meals - except lean cuisine pizza, which is better in the toaster anyway - and cook everything from scratch. In the end, it really doesn't take much longer to cook on the stove or oven or toaster oven.

Don't paint. Every time I've painted something I've regretted it. I agree with comicgeek - sell it to someone who will enjoy it and buy something that's beat up and will benefit from a coat of paint.

I wish you'd posted this 3 months ago before I signed my lease. I believe my bathroom was built by a weekend warrior about 50 years ago and although it's in good working order, when I sit on my toilet my arm is up against the wall :(

I've been looking for this, too! I keep going back to the Rubie Green site in hopes that they will solve their production problems, but I just don't think it's going to happen.

I have been up and down fabric row here in philly and have not been able to find anything that would come close to this.

I'm nervous about using Spoonflower. I can't seem to get the pattern to match up right.

my apartment has a showerhead that looks like it's from a 1970's locker room. I tried everything I could to remove it but years of mineral build up mean that it's not going anywhere unless a plumber comes in to replace the pipes.

I filled a plastic bag with CLR and tied it around the showerhead for 20 minutes. It may still be old, but at least it's clean, rust-free, and doesn't spray everywhere.

I have this same chair sitting in my apartment, but it's covered in blue mohair that desperately needs replacing. It reminded me of an old movie theatre - very glamorous and art deco. I am having the same dilemma as you, except that it was so difficult to get up the stairs into my apartment that I'm worried I won't be able to get it down to be re-upholstered. It's a great chair with great bones. I think I'm going to try to sell it online and let someone else deal with restoring it.

I chose the second apartment I looked at. I didn't even have to see the whole thing before I was ready to sign the lease. Great neighborhood, lots of storage, high ceilings and big windows.

my grandmom had a metal hatch outside the backdoor where you'd drop your trash into the ground and the sanitation workers would empty it every week.

My house still has the old knob and tube electrical wiring. It's been ripped out everywhere but the closets.

My aunts house still has an icebox in the mudroom that has an outside opening so the iceman can just drop the ice in.
