I spent most of my childhood changing schools and/or cities and I've continued to move as an adult, so maybe I have a different view on things. In my mind, all of my high school, college or other friends are still my "friends", even if we rarely ever talk. (I think facebook has definitely helped in this area because I still know what is going on in their lives, even when we don't talk). I know that if I ever happened to be in the same town as them I could call them and we could catch up.

However, reading this article made me think twice about this- am I the only one who feels like we are still friends, no matter the distance or how we have all changed? Do they think of me as an ex-friend? How strange. And sad, since it would reduce my current friends to 1 (my boyfriend) since I just recently finished a masters and will now no longer see my friends regularly.

The link leading to the whole tour seems to have changed and now leads to a subscription page for Hearst Magasines. A shame because I'd like to see the whole tour, especially the part about the sliding ladder...

As someone else commented, white can look dingy when there is not enough light in the room. I live in a small 1930 apartment which gets almost entirely indirect sunlight (that is shaded by nearby buildings as well) and only a sliver of direct sunlight for a few hours a day. My walls are all white but they look dingy. It's still better than an off-white though- my kitchen is a pale off-white yellowish color and it looks like it's dirty (unless you turn on a ton of overly white LED lights).
The best thing in my case would be bright and bold colors I suppose.
Apartment Therapy has done many articles on small spaces and how to make them seem bigger, but I think I'm not the only one who lives in a dark city apartment... can we have an article on dark spaces?

If you've never lived in an apartment that small before, I would suggest not selling all your favorite artwork and furniture- you may need it again if you decide to go back to a bigger apartment. I have no idea how old you are or what the circumstances are, but people tend to want to go out less after a while and you may find yourself wishing you had your old, large place again. At the very least don't sell it right away (unless you think it's too expensive to rent a storage unit) and wait to settle into your new place before you decide to sell your favorite objects.

I agree. Vittsjo looks ok in a home, but it is much better for a garage or attic (albeit a nice-looking one).

I have the same yellow tile in my kitchen! And to everyone who says they would have kept it- you haven't seen it in person.
I will say it has one advantage though: no matter how dirty it gets, you will never see the dust/dirt/dry spaghetti/bread crumbs that have accumulated. (Or in the case of the bathroom, boys' accidents?)

After many months of tedious house-hunting I was so anxious to settle in somewhere that there are a few things I forgot to look into:

1)Supermarkets. I did remember to check if there were supermarkets, but I forgot to check what the supermarket was like. Our nearest supermarket (exlcluding tiny convenience stores) is a low-end supermarket that doesn't stock many of the things I cook with and has a bad fruit/vegetable/meat section. I don't have a car, so the nearest nice supermarket is 30minutes away by foot (bus would probably be the same since there aren't many of them). A real pain!

2)Sunlight in winter vs summer
When we visited the apartment it was summer, usually at noon or in the early afternoon. Sun came in through the northern windows and everything looked great. The problem was that when we moved in in November there was never any direct sunlight. Ever. (well except for the tiny window in the bathroom). Thankfully, ever since January I've noticed some sunlight for about half an hour in the morning. I should have thought to calculate the different ways the sun moves in summer versus winter (but seriously, who does?)

3)Moss/Mold.
Since we visited the apartment in the summer, the common areas outside had just been cleaned. But when we moved in in November, the area was moldy and green. I should have paid more attention to the fact that the common area is cold, damp and dark.

Love this post, though I think I've seen it before. Great walls, great sinks. I'm wondering whether exposing the brick wall is actually more expensive than just redoing the wall in my apartment...

No reason to discard jeans? I see a lot of reasons to discard jeans- 2 pairs are sitting in my outbox right now. One is a great pair of flared jeans, another pair has been too big on my for 3 years (and was accidentally tailored too short in the first place). Why would I keep those? Wait for flared jeans to come back? Wait to gain back those 7 kilos? Both of those thoughts are depressing.

I am feel like I'm in the opposite situation- I am overwhelmed by the LACK of Christmas festivities around me. I generally celebrate with my boyfriend's family since my parents are too far away to visit every Christmas, but his family seems to take Christmas very lightly. Last year we had Christmas Eve dinner where only my boyfriend's parents gave out presents to their kids in a cold, unfestive manner. (oh, I also gave out presents but everyone seemed a bit surprised).
There are no Christmas trees, no decorations, no Christmas music. Christmas day my boyfriend played video games in the morning, his mother cooked (a non-Christmas meal), and his father was out running.
This year I'll be staying home, not to avoid holiday stress like most of you, but rather to have a mini-Christmas celebration all by myself with cheery music, warm food, spiked drinks and a Christmas tree. Happy Holidays!

I have to double check, but silicone should be fine in the oven. There are plenty of silicone objects made for the oven ex. molds. I did see something on the Sugru website saying that it hasn't been tested yet for food products (as it don't cook directly on it), but the silicone should hold up fine in the oven.

I just found out about this product today, and I have a whole bunch of projects planned now!

I love wood, but I have trouble with wood on wood. When, if ever, is wood on wood a good thing? I wouldn't mind reading a design post about that... although I'm sure it boils down to personal preference.

ah, and also jam/jelly. Lasts for at least 3 months outside of the fridge

I live in Europe and there are many things I don't refrigerate.

Someone else mentioned that the Nutellea website states Nutella should be stored at room temperature. I agree, and my Nutella lasts months and months (I'd probably throw it away after a year though).

Also, I keep my eggs out for a few days/ a week, but only if the eggs have not previously been refrigerated (they are sold unrefrigerated in Europe). Once you stick them in the fridge, keep them there.

Another thing I think nobody has mentioned is mustard. I keep my mustard out for months (again, after a year I would probably toss it).

Vinegar, wine, asian sauces such as soy sauce, teriyaki sauce are never in the fridge. Although I have figured out that wine doesn't last very long outside of a fridge. Not sure how long but after a month or two it's vinegar. And NB: I would probably keep Asian fish sauce in the fridge just because it's hard to tell when it's gone bad. It already smells like rotten fish.

I also keep pasta out for a short amount of time: if I make it at night and will eat it the next day at lunch it doesn't go in the fridge. I'll even keep it out for 24 hours sometimes (depending on how cold your place is)
