We registered for and received a very nice sound only monitor that we have used a total of one time. Our house just isn't that big! I also underestimated the power of my mommy-radar when i was pregnant. If my son moved I could hear it across our little house! Another vote for the practical and seemingly mundane (unless you are two!). My son is getting: a utensil set, bubble bath, a tooth brush, toothpaste. Also another vote for the sets of Little People. Loved the book "Baby Bargains" which helped answer your question. Flannel receiving blankets are great for swaddling (they don't slide). Bouncy seat is something we use constantly.
