On Labor day weekend 2008 we lost power for 36 hours during a huge storm here in Phoenix; three storms collided and knocked down trees, knocked out power and flooded streets. My boyfriend was out during the storm and when he got home, our street was dark except for our house. He found me sitting in the living room reading, surrounded by battery operated mini lanterns and radio, candles lit all around, with flashlights at the ready. He used to worry about lighting candles, fearing fires, but was happy to have light that night! We also still have an old style land line phone, (in addition to cordless home phone and cell phones) as it does not rely on electricity to work--handy if you need to call the power company and the cell needs to be charged! I used plumbersurplus.com for a great deal of the sourcing of Vanity, sink, hardware, and accessories for our two bathroom remodels. I also used Hakatai for tile (www.hakatai.com), and they were wonderful! Great customer service and I love my glass tile. I also had a wonderful contractor who listened to my ideas and followed through on my vision. Good luck! Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Bathroom Renovation Resources? Good Questions |

I use Bio Kleen, and have been considering Mrs. Meyers--thanks for the review! On another note, I have to play grammar police as well (sorry); it should be: "synthetic fabrics 'ARE' notorious".... Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Test Lab: Mrs. Meyer's Laundry Detergent |

I always swear by picking a color and painting a good sized (3'x4'?) piece of foamcore and taping it up on the wall. I move the painted foamcore around to different areas of the room at different times of day to see how the light affects the color; usually leave it up for a few days to a week. With this you are not stuck with painted patches on the walls, or seeing how the color reacts to light in only one area of the room. Try www.PlumberSurplus.com for good resources at discounted prices. I just purchased the Elements of Design model ES8661DL that has a similar feel. They have many more choices and good brand names. Good luck! Apartment Therapy New York | Good Questions: Similar Bathroom Faucet Hardware? |

We cannot recycle shredding in the local recycle pick-up here in Phoenix, but the Humane Society accepts shredding to use for the animals (litter box, etc.) They have a big bin outside to drop off donations of shredding, food, linens or other pet related stuff. That is now our way to recycle rather than throw it away. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Starting Anew in the New Year... What to Keep and What to Shred |

I work for a florist doing seasonal decorating work (people with big homes and lots of $, as well as commercial buildings). Today was our first day decorating, a big (7000 sq. ft.) home with lots of decor. Usually we start around the 7-8th of November, so this is a late start. Personally, I have always waited until the weekend after Thanksgiving for outdoor lights, and at least December first to put up my tree and decor at home, but last year I was bit burnt out on decorating by the time I got around to my house. That said, this weekend I will be creating the new garland/swags (decorating faux pine garland with wired in ornaments and ribbon) to go over windows, but I won't hang them up yet. I am tempted to hang them the weekend before Thanksgiving so that when I come back from visiting the inlaws I will come home to some Christmas stuff. My boyfriend loves the garlands, and asks me every year to leave them up year round, so it would be a nice surprise for him if they were up when we come home. I casually refer to my house as "Crooked Manor"; in my renovations I have come to find that nothing is plumb or even--crooked doorframes, crooked walls, uneven floor where they added a room.... The previous owner did a fair amount of (badly done) DIY and now I get to try to straighten it out! Apartment Therapy Chicago | Does Your House Have a Name? |

I remembered the bookcase and looked it up to confirm; it was featured in an article in Blueprint which said: "The [home office] design's inspiration was the bookcase, which Joelle [the woman who lived in the apartment] found, abandoned, in a former apartment. She thinks it was originally a music center" (Issue 4, page 92) Apartment Therapy Chicago | Goodbye Bluelines |
