A thoughtful question to pose. After losing my mother, I hung a small framed photograph of her holding me as a newborn on my bedroom wall, down low next to the windowsill so that it is at eye level when I wake up. Not noticeable to most people, it is a comfort. I do have other personal family items, of course, but that small black and white snap-shop means the most. How Do You Memorialize Loved Ones at Home? |

Great home - feels lived in and loved. Quick question- i love the corrugated metal fencing behind your garden area. It looks like it might be your neighbor's, but I wonder if you know how it was constructed? Might be just the modern look I need that could still keep the deer out of in my little PA cottage garden patch. Thanks! Molly & Tyler's Classic Cool Cottage House Tour |

Scavenger is fun part of AT, but I wish the host would consider selecting pieces that are not from what are, clearly, furniture stores (see 1950s secretary and pair of mid-century dressers above, which both seem to be at the same shop). The S.O. and I stayed at the NY Standard over New Years during their "soft launch" (yes, I live in Manhattan, but it was fun to be one of the first guests and check out the design)and I can attest to both the fabulous water view as well as an equally appealing city view. We were put into one room, but when we asked about the promised tub (some rooms have large double shower head showers instead), we were moved to another. It was fun to see the different rooms. One note - their queen beds and king beds are the same length - only about 6 ft max, so if you're at all tall, plan on sleeping on the angle! Hi-I recognize this spot; it is actually a cigar bar, not a restaurant. I imagine there are people interested in sitting outside for a smoke for a few minutes. Apartment Therapy New York | Look! Folding Chairs Made Warmer with Scarves |

You could make some extra space around the bed by exchanging the bedside tables for reading lights mounted on the wall above the headboard and perhaps a shelf running between them. Apartment Therapy New York | Good Questions: Suggestions for this Bedroom? |

I was having breakfast with my dad in his rental condo near the UN. He was visiting me in NYC for the first time since I had moved here years before. My mother had passed away and it was a long time before he was able to summon the energy to come. He had driven all the way from Chicago with my mom's dog for company. I was planning to take the afternoon off and walk to the WTC to pick up half-priced tickets for a matinee at the "Hot Tix" booth inside the North tower. I don't know why all the negativity. FSBO postings have been on AT for a couple of years. They are not supposed to be "aspirational" nor necessarily examples of good design. They are available to enhance AT's community - by letting AT'ers get an early jump on apartments that are For Sale By Owner (i.e. a much better deal than through a broker and very, very rare in NYC). Hi - I have a "fire in my non-working fireplace all the time in the winter. I use those gel cans (I call it "Fire in a Can") and I can confirm that they work great. They create no soot - in fact their by-product somehow is water. I have a metal grate that comes up high enough to hide the cans. When I have 2 or 3 going, it is really great. They even have a "crackle sound" somehow engineered in and give off some small heat. There is absolutely no fire hazard and they are much cleaner burning than candles; just don't leave it burning unattended. Love it! I just had a new white porcelain kitchen sink installed, and the guys left little globs of clear acrylic adhesive on the sink and countertop. Does anyone know how to remove this stuff without scratching the procelain or staining the counter? Thanks! Apartment Therapy - Tips: 31 |

I was in Montreal recently and drove past this complex. I am a huge modernist and advocate of modern architecture, but I am sorry to have to say that from the exterior, at least, these buildings look awful. I appreciate the concept (and the great water views that everyone has) and certainly would prefer living in a "hill town" or pueblo rather than a high-rise, but unfortunately this particular design really missed the mark for me. Hi- Love the idea, but more details, please! what kind of lighting fixture did you use? (long-tubed undercounter types or something with several little lights scattered around)? Is it hard wired or does it plug in somewhere? And how do you turn it on/off? And what is "laminated starfire glass"? Would just frosted white glass do the same thing? Thank you!! I recently sold my sofa on CL to a funny, wacky young woman who then added me to her general email list (she is an actress/performer). Just this week I received an email that she was on "This American Life" with Ira Glass, contributing a story about writing her own break-up song with the real-life help of Phil Collins. I had to listen (free download of the show at www.thislife.org) and was amazed. I still don't really know her, but she added something fantastic to my day. I certainly hope the boyfriend didn't get the sofa in the split. Thanks, Craig! Apartment Therapy - Craigslist |
