No mention of the Booda Dome? Slightly futuristic looking, and the "stairs" help cut down on the amount of litter that gets tracked around. http://www.amazon.com/Booda-Dome-Cleanstep-Cat-Titanium/dp/B0002DH8L4

I never wear shoes in my apartment, but every floor board in my bedroom creaks no matter where I step, regardless of rugs and pads. I'm sure it must drive the downstairs people bonkers, since I work from home, often until 2 or 3 a.m., which mean I end up creaking on the floors when I have to go to bed. But then again, they often have very loud sex at 3, 4 and 5 a.m....so I figure it all equals out in the end. (Although I have been tempted to leave a note...more so because I can't help but think the woman's theatrics mean she's faking, and I'd love to tweak them about it.)

It's on Estes, in the Rogers Park neighborhood. I live nearby and absolutely love it--it's completely charming and was a total "plus" when deciding to move into my current location.

Hate to point out the obvious but for people who are getting grossed out: if you eat any kind of packaged/processed food in the U.S., you are eating a certain amount of insect parts that the FDA/USDA deem "acceptable" in low numbers. Also, many food use insect extracts for coloring (cochineal extract, carmine) that are not labeled when coming from insects, so you are likely already eating insect by-products each year. On the bright side, insects are good sources of protein and eaten by a wide variety of cultures--and the human body is designed to digest a wide variety of "food," including insects.

Have you tried a cat dancer? It's super-cheap and low-tech: some bits of cardboard on a wire. It's the only thing my cat, Sid Vicious, has ever liked playing with.

Darn. I've had the WPA print hanging in my bathroom for 10+ years. I'm going to be really unhappy if it starts to become as ubiquitous as the "Keep calm".

Okay, I'm creeped out just reading this. Last year bed bugs were found in one of the other units in my building. The landlords took quick action and, so far, I've never had them (knock wood!!). But besides checking obsessively when you come inside or return from vacation, and never picking up furniture from a curb/alley, what else should you do to make sure none of the little buggers decide to come home home with you? (I worry especially about my neighbors getting them and spreading them to me.)

@HeyNowTex: It's not product placement at all. Steig Larsson was a dedicated revolutionary socialist (and an anti-fascist targeted with violence for his work)--not some shill for Ikea.

I think this part in the book is a comment on how comforting the rituals of buying can be in a consumerist society, especially for a character who's been abused and displaced her entire life.

I'm totally intrigued by Lampe Berger now! Can anyone who has one recommend where to get one, and how you use it?

Wardrobe boxes with a bar for hanging clothes. If you hang a large portion of your clothes, as I do, having these cuts down immeasurably on the time it takes to unpack.

8 Things That Make Moving That Much Easier

Hi - just a note to say that this is, indeed, misidentified as San Francisco. This fence belongs to a house in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. It's on Ashland, just north of Estes, next to St. Paul's by the Lake. (I walked by it today and double checked...I recognize the details of the porch of the house next door, as well as the trim color on the house, etc.)

It's around the corner from where I live and I've always enjoyed it--although the placement of the frames in person is less tidy looking...there are slight differences in height/frame style that make the way the fences hangs together look slightly less polished up close.

Also, the yard is in fact quite tiny in the front of the house. It's planted not with grass but with small ground-cover plants. It has a bit of an overgrown/wild look to it that the fence compliments.

Oh gosh...my mistake. I just noticed this is from SF, not Chicago. There is a *very similar* house/fence combo here in Rogers Park. (The yard is smaller...but I believe the house is stucco and the bike frames are hung to form a fence in an identical manner.)

My comments apply to the house/fence here in Chicago. Sorry for getting them mixed up.

PS...the bike frame fence doesn't really detract from the house in my opinion. In person the exterior of the house isn't particularly impressive--the frames definitely add to it.

LOL...this is in my neighborhood! I pass it all the time and love it (although up close it sometimes looks a little "rickety"...something about the way the frames hang together.)

Next time I think you should turn the corner onto Estes and photograph the leopard print house! I'd love to see what AT readers think of *that*. (I love it--but then again I have a high tolerance for kitsch.)

I took a co-ed home economics class in junior high. While the cooking skills weren't especially helpful (my sister and I both had to help fix family meals during the summer--it was part of our chores) the one skill I was especially grateful for was learning the proper way to hand wash dishes. (Especially the idea of washing glasses/stemware first, pots last.) It's such a little thing, but so important!

Here's a question - I generally go the laundromat down the street from my apartment so I can do large loads all at once.

The one problem: the industrial dryers don't have lint traps and I have a *very fuzzy* cat whose hair gets embedded in everything.

Any ideas (besides the usual lint brushes, etc) for how to de-hair clothes if you're dealing with dryers that don't have lint traps? (And no, shaving my evil cat is *not* an option unless I want bloody arms.)

Dryer sheets don't seem to make much difference. I'm wondering if there's a product I can add to the washer or dryer that will help attract the hair like a lint trap would in a normal dryer.

Not to be inappropriately political...I'd just point out that there's at least one group on this list that I personally wouldn't donate to based on its anti-gay policies. Just a reminder that it does make a difference where you choose to donate money (or used items) and that it's worth investigating groups you want to donate to.

Thanks for the other tips though!
