In San Francisco we have a wood-burning fireplace ban, but I always thought it was due to earthquake-->fire issues than pollution. Which makes me wonder if pellets would be ok here, or not? Any tips on how to investigate this? I am really intrigued by this heating option...

What do you use for hardwood or marble? And, my struggle is always what to keep a mix in-- it is nice to have a bottle of all purpose cleaner around for a quick clean up. I have some good "recipes" for it-- they work--but can't ever figure out the right (nonplastic)container. Thoughts/advice?

Merquez (zoo not vegan!) and a vegetarian tagine... which could totally be vegan.
Chili and gruyere/corn muffins Sunday. Sigh. Midwinter just says slow-cooked (meat) to me.

Love the color combo in the paper used for those cones.

Handmade seems to be a theme this year: I made an advent calender, too!

I love the acorn one. I bet you could make it with chestnuts... or even wrapped chocolates for a sweet treat/gift.

My tree is a bit of a cheat, as it is simply decorating an old jewelry stand-- but my son is quite fascinated, and I like the colors:

Not a meal, but you could make one out of that!

I am committed to this, but struggling with it.... my son:homemade play kitchen,knitted-by-me play fruit, purchased play kitchen plates/pans, etc. My husband: Charley Harper needlepoint, made by me. Brother-in-law: painting by my son that he loves, framed and matted.
My mother-in-law: knitting/sewing project bag, made by me, embroidered with a picture by my son.

General gift: cookies/spice pecans/tomato conserva and a lasagna recipe/homemade curry paste and a curry recipe.

But this leaves my father-in-lawand my parents, andI have NOOO idea what to make them. :(

@Paul:
-homemade ketchup is VERY tasty, much better than Heinz and it is impressive + a nice hostess gift.
-conserva
-tomato-carrot soup (try googling for Soulemama) -- you can dress it italian(w basil) or indian (yogurt, curry)-- very good, clean tasting.

We are still (finally) inundated with tomatoes, and it's football season, and I have to practice for the annual Chili Cook-off we attend in October, so: chili, more tomato conserva, and some ketchup. Probably the coconut french toast I saw in last week's weekend cooking thread, and tomorrow night, some red snapper-- they've had line caught local wild red snapper at Whole Food for $4.99 lb, and it is delicious, so I just keep buying it....

I used to buy Padron peppers occassionally, but don't go to that market/vendor any more ($$$$$). Just bought some shishito's to try --cooked the same way -- on Saturday... and we are having them tonight (forgot them yesterday)... sea salt + a hot skillet

I always think of Southern food as the go-to for make ahead stuff.. .mostly because it was too hot to cook much during the day in the South in the summer before air-conditioning.. those ladies had years of practice at perfecting luncheon dishes!
In particular, I like curried chicken salad, biscuits, cupcakes, slaw... in october maybe I would do a beet salad instead of the slaw, and perhaps a spice cake.

I've owned the Helen Chen one, or something like it, for 12 or so years-- the key is to season/treat it as you would cast iron. My stir fries are always good, too :).
But I also have an ancient O'Keefe & Merritt (high/hot gas)-- electric stove might require something different.
