I would not paint the cabinets, but clean, paste wax, and polish them. They go well with your table, chairs, and large cabinet, from what I can see in the photos. Simplify your window treatment, put the cabinet against the wall, chose one of the light colors in the backsplash to paint your walls, add an area rug under the table and a simple light fixture. Personally, I love the large cabinet and would never replace it. Wish I had one.

Yes to laminate! Practical, beautiful, easy to care for. I would try to match the color as close as you can if you have adjoining rooms. If the design or wood-look is not the same it is not that noticeable if the colors match.
