I think the woodwork is actually beautiful. Since it's so massive and unavoidable, I'd try to work with it instead of trying to change what it is. Instead, use white and silver tones elsewhere to help balance the space so that it's not overly brown everywhere.

This picture is a great example of someone allowing the woodwork to be what it is while adding a modern feel elsewhere:
