Love it - not at all staged, but still a beautiful home tour. Fun to see a family in SF. Hip, modern, without running into the tropes we sometimes see her on AT. More fun tours like this!

Yikes, this strikes a chord with me. My boyfriend's mom always gets us "stuff" - there is no better way to describe it. We live in a VERY small apt, have everything we could need and more (we recently moved in together and still are dealing with consolidating households), and, to top it off, I really REALLY don't share her taste.

I explicitly told her I have EVERYTHING I NEED and gave her the name of a local charity she could donate to in my name if Christmas really equated so strongly to purchasing for her. Lo and behold, she didn't donate to the charity, but did buy me tons of stuff that I still can't find a place for the apt. I just don't get it. She never seems to want to spend time with me or us, but insists on purchasing many gifts for me / us.

i'm just gonna go for it: i think the reason the picture is offending people and looks *so* servile is the white man / dark woman image. esp since she is wearing what looks like a "traditional" looking blouse and her skirt looks like an apron. It ends up looking like "i bought myself a lil mexican cook / cleaner / pootang"

i'm not commenting on what their relationship is, but that picture definitely has some strong visual symbols that resonate with the ideas people some people have of why white men marry outside their race.

@ChrisGal: You said you don't care if alcohol is served or not. Then why do you complain on an internet message board about alcohol being served at parties, and why do you assume drinking indicates some moral failure of our society? You can't have it both ways!

do NOT remove crystals / modify the chandelier. do NOT put tacky little shades over the bulbs. do put in lower voltage / smaller profile bulbs. you could try shortening the chain it is on so it hangs closer to the ceiling. get other big, bold pieces so there is balance. it's beautiful!

drewbert - i think not. the shellac is to protect the decorative paper on the outside, the inside is metal and doesn't need protecting.

dear hmr:

the world is not dirty. have you ever taken public transport? did it kill you / make you sick? I think a lot of our germ-phobia has been taught by cleaning companies who want us to think we need to wipe / spray / disinfect to be healthy, when really the opposite is true.

what might another person have done to their couch to make it so "Unclean!"? If they really did something *that* atrocious, there would be a smell or stain to attest to it. I feel your fear is more akin to fear of "the other" (those people might not be clean, LIKE ME) or a fear of a lack of control (you don't know what "the other" did that might not be CLEAN, LIKE ME).

if you really want to get over this fear, just be observant while making any second-hand purchases. if observation of the couch alone will not persuade you, then have fun buying new couches.

is this out of reach / out-of-touch with most readers? yes! but how much of the stuff we wet-dream about on here isn't?

another thing about this post - all the use of bleach is no good! bleach is carcinogenic, if we're so worried about our health we should cut down on its use.

"Please, remember what pallets are designed for - they have to withstand water, wind and weather and are therefore soaked in all kinds of nasty chemicals. Therefore: use pallets only for outdoor use - and try to paint them, this coating might keep the pesticides/herbicides in. Never use them indoors!

whenever i see pallet stuff here, i remember one comment someone left on another post here about certain pallets being treated with nasty nasty chemicals. they said that if pallets are shipped internationally or overseas they've been treated with super toxic stuff to prevent pests getting from one locale to the next....going to go look for the post now...

@ nornor, sometimes people use the tip of a key (the part you'd insert into the lock) to dip into baggies of powdered drugs. you then bring the key under your nose and snort the drugs - key bumps.

I like it white. I think it'd look awesome with a super bright red door and shutters, or another bright, primary color on the door / shutters / trim, as suggested by other commenters. Gorgeous house!!

geez guys, crackheads are people too. while that was a bit of a joke, i am really disgusted by the professed love of gentrification I see here. you are all seemingly adherents to the idea that poor people are inherently bad and choose to be criminals and drug addicts. poverty BREEDS criminal activity and addiction. stop blaming people for problems that you, lovely members of the Gentry, have imposed on these people in order to increase your monetary gains. when will people stop getting to the top by standing on those below them? you all disgust me.

no wonder this country is going down the toilet.
