i had initially hoped to self-cater our wedding but am glad i was talked out of it. instead i baked my heart out -- 42 dozen homemade cookies that guests took with them as favors & 10 flavors of layer cakes arranged on mismatched plates. the things i ended up doing allowed me to convey my love for cooking and for our guests without making the wedding experience super-stressful. in the end we got one of our favorite local cajun restaurants to cater. not only did we get to share something we love with our people, but they got to try food they might never have before.

what happens when you prime and the primer doesn't seem to make the paint stick to the walls? i just painted for the first time in years this weekend -- a peony pink over a cranberry shade. the guy at home depot said i needed to use a grey primer so i did. it still took 2 coats of the paint to cover and then, while pulling up the painters tape, huge sections of primer and paint pulled off. what did i do wrong??

indianapolis here also

currently live in the meridian kessler neighborhood for those in the know. 3BR/1BA duplex, around 1400 sqft spread over 2 floors, shotgun style $800/month and we pay all utilities (water, gas, electric)

before that 3rd floor walk-up at 34th and meridian roughly for $650/month and paid only electric. horrible management company and neighbors ran us out of there after only a year

i feel like the rents in the area are a bit inflated considering the price we'd pay if we bought but we don't want to be owners because of the hassle. i suppose we're lucky with what we pay for our neighborhood. something similar should be around $1000/month.

question: what do you do when you think the neighbors who share your duplex are drug dealers?

our neighbors have frequent 'visitors' who pull up, leave their car running, run inside their house for 10-20 minutes and then are gone. 2-3 times a night. either they have micro-visits with actual friends or they're drug dealers, right?

anyone else lived next door to drug dealers? did it become a problem at all?

i'm slightly concerned we're more apt to be the victims of property crime because of this. we did not know about this when we signed our lease and moved in. to make matters stickier our neighbor is the daughter of our landlord. bringing this to the landlord's attention would effectively be accusing her daughter of illegal behavior.

what do y'all think?

i almost ALWAYS take my own towel and washcloth with me when i'm a houseguest. i have to admit, though, it's less about the chore burden on my hosts and more because i have had to dry off with way too many 'sour' towels in my day. i cannot abide by drying off with something that smells the second you get it wet and then walking around feeling stinky all day.

they think i'm being polite/i get to control the towel situation = win for everyeone.

Hi there! This is Leann --

First of all, thank you so much for providing such quick feedback. I have to admit that I was pretty certain I'd get the 'don't do it yourself' reaction (I think maybe I was hoping for it, to be honest).

My next question is this -- if any of you are in the Indianapolis area do you know of a caterer that will allow you to set the menu for your event? So far the few I've talked to have been the kind where you just choose from their 3 chicken options, 2 starch options, etc... I definetly DO NOT want that. I want our personalities in the food for the day.

To the folks who mentioned it, we have been lucky enough to find a venue that will allow us to use our own caterer. They're even allowing us to provide our own alcohol for the event, which is a big coup!

Thanks again for taking the time to provide feedback.

I think I can pretty much top the 'worst mess ever' contest.

I had a very vindictive black cat, see. Her litter box was in the random little hallway closet in my old apartment that was really near to my bedroom. One night I went to bed and smelled what I thought was just extra-pungent cat poop in the box. As I slid my legs between my sheets I soon found out that it was indeed extra-pungent cat poop but it was in my bed, not the box. Needless to say I was covered in runny cat poop. To clean it up I immediately took a shower (and I think I cried a little). The sheets were not salvagable so I threw them out (they were white and there was no way that stain was coming out--plus, EWW!!). The mattress cover/mattress itself smelled like poop for a while, no matter how much Febreeze and Lysol I sprayed on them. Amazingly the cat was allowed to stay in my house but I never trusted her again.

Please, please send me the pretty pretty vacuum for my horror story, Apartment Therapy. Thanks!!
