Excellent advice, all of it. My contribution is: "Poor grammar is the equivalent of dirty fingernails for your online personality." For example, "If I would have had a checklist..." and "...if only I would have known sooner" would make more sense if they read "If I'd had a checklist" and "if only I had known sooner."
