It's probably worth a patent, but it doesn't deserve to have an exhorbitant price.

Won't the whole thing heat up when hot water is used? Maybe it's designed, but is it engineered? Also, I can see the whole thing just cracking off the wall.

I hope that stuff on the high shelves is earthquake-proofed.

If it works anything like the fingerprint scanner on my computer, you're going to have a lot of trouble getting in the door, even if your fingerprint is stored in there.

If it were designed by engineers for industrial purposes, it would be stronger and cheaper.

I can't believe how much effort you put into your place despite the fact that you're only in grad school for a short while. I'm also in grad school and will be for a while, but I feel so much impermanence (perhaps because I've lived in five places in the last three years) that I don't want to acquire too much. I also anticipate making the cross-country move again and am horrified of moving my belongings. And so my apartment isn't too decorated. Your place is lovely, and I like the furnishings. You've inspired me to clean up my place!

The above dorm room is rather like a prison cell.

You forgot to mention that students throw away so much stuff every year. (Several articles on it last season.) So many thrown away fridges used for a year and other expensive items since it's hard to properly get rid of everything when you have, like, half a day after finals to be gone without a trace. Over here, students can just leave used furniture, etc. out in the open, and then they will be collected and sold (proceeds to charity) at the start of the next year. I heard somebody even left a piano once.

Buying used is the right way to go.

Several years ago, Ikea had a TV ad where they went onto trains and decked everything out. I guess they're really doing it now. How long has they been at it?

Sheesh, don't they do this at restaurant, hotel, and department store bathrooms? Not a totally new idea.

Nice idea. The tripod is too bulky, though. I would love a real Leica for use as a camera.

Wow. I guess I'm in good company. I just went on a trip and I spent the week before it doing laundry, changing sheets, washing all the dishes, taking out all the trash/recyclables, watering plants, eating the rest of the food, etc. But I should have been working. I have realized that things will be OK if you don't get all that stuff done. When I return, even if there's gross food in the fridge, I will survive. I also realize I should be cleaning the house all the time (and also backing up my laptop data). So this time, I just did the essentials, which turned out to be a long list, but I left the floor unvacuumed, the stove dirty, the mail unmailed... And I still thought my house looked so clean when I got back. Once you've shared a room with someone else for a week and get back to your own "giant" apartment, it's just great to be back home.

Thanks allisonlindsay. I was wondering if you could grow citrus indoors! I just wonder if I could even find one out here in upstate NY. I want to get an indoor shrub/tree that I can put outside in the summertime.

you'd still have to let it dry first before hiding it.

Oh my gosh. That's a bedroom in L.A.?! There shouldn't be heavy stuff right above the bed that can fall off in the event of an earthquake. AT:LA should have a guide on stupid earthquake hazards.

There's something like this out here in Ithaca, Significant Elements, but I've never been there. They have so much, apparently, that once a month on a Friday customers can take many things for free. It's non-profit, so I bet things are cheaper than that NYC place. I can't tell you if it's worth a trip out here. If I actually owned a place, I'd probably be in there a lot.
