DC Mandy, I know! It was actually a gift from a very traditional friend of my mother's, and I'm forever grateful to her! It's never something I probably would have gotten for myself.

I think in this case, the takeaway is more the idea than the recipe. Absolutely no reason you have to use a box mix! The technique, which is basically just putting fondant letters into the batter, would work for any homemade cake, too.

CupofNimbus, I think the idea here is that there's a resurgence in cocktail-making all around the country, particularly of the unusual or artisanal (ack! I said it!) variety. So, these cocktail choices are going to be a little out of the ordinary, and they're meant to be, I think. Basically, innovation is alive and well in the cocktail world, and these are all new spins on a region's classic flavor or a new interpretation altogether.

But if nothing else, it's excellent insight into the minds of some super skilled bartenders! And something new to try once it hits 5pm tonight.

Pearmelon, yes, of course that often happens! I think the difference in this case was that it was clearly not a result of them being behind or unprepared. There was nothing frantic about it. It was really presented as a ritual, a way of beginning the evening together, which made it very different than regular roping-in-guest type things! :)
