you could remove the current headboard and build one, like these people did:

it looks like this person just painted a faux headboard:

ahh! i could never cut up my hudson bay blanket to cover an ottoman with it! not very cost efficient either. they are very scratchy too... not very comfy for a piece of furniture.

interesting idea with the toilet paper rolls. hope the room has good ventilation or they're going to start getting mushy from all those hot showers!

i think this is great. as a fellow young person who does not make enough money to be able to purchase an apartment's worth of eames furniture, i can appreciate this post. good on you, Jules and Tyler (and AT) for featuring an accessible space that reflects a realistic budget.

looks like a Boston dorm to me! Isobel, why don't you purchase a small loveseat and place it perpendicular to the fireplace/parallel to your desk? that way, people will see it when they walk in (adding to the warm, welcoming feel) AND it will hide your workspace? either that, or two armchairs? make a little conversation area out of it.

oh boy. i want to appreciate this for its innocence, but i just can't. as a preschool teacher, i can't support the stereotypes of this birthday party. in college i learned how to teach thanksgiving to young children, and the crafts, games, etc. in this party are all good examples of what NOT to do. i agree with what other people have commented... this is dressing up as an ethnicity, which objectifies it and makes it into a funny, silly thing.

developmentally, these little kids don't yet have a strong understanding of abstract concepts such as "a long time ago" or "culture," so they probably left this birthday party thinking that all american indians still live like this today.

furthermore, if you want to educate children about the ways of other people and cultures, give them real experiences... find an authentic meal and cook it together, find a craft and make it with real materials. plastic beads, headresses made out of felt, and chocolate cupcakes don't really cut it.

in my opinion, birthday parties should not be turned into "history lessons." honestly, the best birthday parties don't even have themes. typically, children love running around, eating cake, and opening presents... especially when they are this young. don't overthink it. and don't have a theme party just to impress the other parents who will attend. be realistic and respect your child.

i fell in love with these homes when i went this past weekend... but was it just me, or did anyone else feel like they were on the island from LOST?

i bet everyone else already said this (too lazy to read other comments), but the quickest fix is to hang beautiful, sheer fabric across the walls. buy two of these:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60075295

and hang them from the ceiling. choose something sheer and white so that light will come through on the windowed wall. this will also double as your window treatment! and another plus: the fabric will hide any wires or extension cords you use.

if you keep everything light and simple, it will look FABULOUS.

i agree with kristian... the article is misleading. i think kristan does a great job on the show, but when it comes to her own home... the idea of "design on a dime" doesn't really carry. being an interior decorator, she obviously has a lot of nice stuff to begin with. the $600 worth of stuff from roost was probably in her possession before the makeover... so they don't count it in the final tally.

even though it's tiny, you have a very cute and classy bathroom. good call on repainting the woodwork. i think the yellow could work... just keep everything else simple. cover the red floor in FLOR tiles. The site has a bunch of options for a bathroom:

http://www.flor.com/service/flor/shop/rooms/bathroom.html

once the red is gone, stick to a light and airy palette. bright white and light blue would look nice with the yellow.

since it's a rental, i would just keep the tub silver.

good luck and send pictures when it's done!
