I don't have a helpful comment but just wanted to say that your daughter is adorable. Oh, and I know that when my husband was little, his parents had a small gift waiting for him when they brought home his younger brother to try to make the transition feel celebratory and fun. It might be seen as bribery but my husband seems to have bonded well with his brother. Good luck. How Did You Prepare Your Toddler for a New Sibling? |

Sofa shopping is so hard. What about a simple best of sofas? Or best reading chairs? I'm always in need of guidance for these items. Thanks. Best of the Best ... So Far: The Best of Apartment Therapy's Annual Guides |

Addendum: I also sort of like the upholstery and it looks like it's in good shape and probably good quality. Which makes the chairs an even better score. As for painting a metallic, I wish I understood that whole faintly Liberace thing with Hollywood Regency but I just don't get it. Metallic seems like it would both look cheap and be hard to live with. That said, I'm sure it could be done well and I might be surprised how good it could look given the right context. I agree with the others that the wood is good without painting. If you don't like the wood, the only color I'd personally consider is white. I feel that painting wood furniture bright colors has been done to death in recent years and usually looks sort of garish. Of course, if you want to do something daring and go for it, you can also always strip 'em and start over again. I'd also add to the chorus that those are some gorgeous chairs. We have the Jackson from Room and Board in leather. It's held up well over several years and has gotten more comfortable with time (although it did start out pretty comfy). I guess I'm torn about sofa comfort because to me, you can't beat the shabby chic style overstuffed sofa for comfort but I hate the look at least in my home. My home also can't handle oversized furniture (it ends up looking like some set piece from Pee-Wee's Playhouse because older homes like min from the 50's have smaller rooms). Even sofas in the 40" deep range cause trouble. So I go for things that are more tailored all the while secretly wondering if I should have gone all out for comfort with something more like the Crate and Barrel Oasis. I guess it will always be one of those challenges for me. Also, I think Ikea Ektorp is genius (lovely replaceable slipcovers that fit well and are a steal) and had one that held up fairly well over several years and was very comfy. But those rolled arms just aren't my thing. I'll never understand why Ikea doesn't do a good Cado wall shelving knock-off and a good clean lined sofa. At one time I was excited by the Karlstad but one the floor, it always looks so worn and cheap, unlike the Ektorp, IMO. The Best Comfortable Couches for Seriously Lazy Lounging |

I totally agree with the idea of keeping what you love. And that it's a good thing to pass on something that you just don't like in order to give it a home with someone who will love it. As for the lady who is surrounded by things that her husband bought with his ex, that alone is grounds to get rid of it IMO. The things we surround ourselves with have so much meaning and if so areconstantly reminded of a partner's previous relationship, that is a not a great way to live (unless it doesn't bug you). I'm from Seattle and the bed frame in Kurt Cobain's bedroom used to be commonly found for very little $ at flea markets in Aberdeen. A famliy friend bought one for me when I was a child. It was beautifully made, fit together cleverly. When I see Kurt's room, I think of local vintage shopping, not so much that he was a junkie. I guess I feel a little protective of his room! I'd like to add that since I tried Frog Tape, I can't imagine going back to any other brand. Much cleaner lines, better adhesion, and yet it seems to release just as well. It costs more but works so much better! 5 Essential Tools For Your Next Room Painting Project |

I don't know that I've ever seen a better display of art and I simply love your taste. The art really is wonderful. I love how textured and detailed the rooms are...almost like a beautiful tapestry that you keep seeing more detail in the closer you look. Such a cool home! This is just the reason I love the house tours...a peek into spaces that feel so personal and creative. Love this home! That pair of armless chairs in the living room is probably my favorite pair of chairs I've ever seen. Are they vintage or new? Any ideas where to source something similar? I really like Manuko's idea of fabric. Your furniture seems like a nice neutral canvas and you could easily add pattern and color for big impact without spending a lot this way. You could even experiment with things you happen to have around your home (pretty fabric, small rugs, artwork from other places in your home just to get a sense of what it would look like). This seems like a fun task! What To Do With Blank Wall Behind Sofa? Good Questions |

I love the mixture of vintage and newer things. And although I see why some are puzzled by the unfinished ceiling, I think that's what makes it so original and warm (all those shadows and the richness of the exposed wood). How wonderful to describe the style as "chic grandma." Particularly enjoy the wingchair that is finished with a different, solid material in the back. Gorgeous home. But what I actually find most inspiring is Mara's photo. Adorable outfit, stylish but so natural looking. I'm planning to use that for inspiration. Mara & Alex's First Home as a Married Couple House Tour |
