I love it when I live alone... only thing that bugs me a bit is the notion that one can only take time to make an apartment nice, cook fancy meals etc when it's for Other People. Surely you're worth every bit as much love and attention as any other soul on earth?

Enough people (especially, but not exclusively, women) have a martyr complex without needing reinforcement of their notions that living alone = living monastically, in stark surroundings and eating from cracked plates - yet it's something I've noticed many people do when they have no significant other/flatemates to care for.

Beth, I'm an arachnophobe too, trust me you'll sleep better if you 1. shake the pillowcases out BEFORE you go to bed! and 2. consider looking into oils that repel spiders, lavender is one that's also very sleep-friendly.

If you were staying in a hotel, use a little as soon as you've checked in, it should have time to get to work before you hit the sack.

At home, you may also want to look into various solutions like using a citronells/citrusy polish on the base boards and other wood round your bed - I read that they trained the spider in arachnophobia by using lemon-scented Mr Sheen, because spiders taste through their feet: further proof that they're hostile aliens, at least! lol

Chestnuts in season and various proprietory sprays work well, and if you're travelling you can also buy plug-in repellers, do your research because some have good reviews, and some bad.

I confess, yesterday I counted how many times I used a towel, on an average day, and it turns out I'd be washing eleven towels a day, including lavatory handwashing/drying as a use of course, as well as drying my hands after washing up & housework, one shower and two face wash/toothbrushing episodes.

I'd like to know if the OP considers washing and drying 11 towels a day on a high heat, possibly with some bleach added, to be even remotely responsible with regards to the enviroment, and also if they would be willing to subsidise my fuel bills?

@Modtramp, I would have put my bitchy pants on, but I was too busy boiling them in bleach, while I sprayed my butt with Lysol - sorry!

At least the image has now changed to something suitably OTT and hysterical, to match the tone of the main post - presumably second-hand copyrighted imagery turns out to be dangerous, as well...

LOl I agree w/abc123 - just have a ffs naughty item, don't try to deck it out, make it go undercover...

And as I typed that - it hit me why I cared - crinoline ladies over toilet rolls!!!

Bodily needs, be they eating, pooping, or having some hot fun (alone, or with others) do NOT need to be disguised: who is sane, yet would disguide their icemaker or cheese dish, as an aspidistra?

Or something! LOL

@maike daily trips to the hypothetical attic will probably be required... ;)

Thanks teacupcake!

Will think about how that can apply in my room, thanks for replying! :)

@FigurativeSketches thanks for the input, interesting - we only nursed our rescues back to physical health, and let the family/flock do the rest - they did, but regardless of any concern for decor, anyone who gives an animal a break after tough times deserves utmost respect. ;)

"ammanda- Consider a greyhound, they're basically big cats and aren't particularly dog-like in any traditional way."

I second that - I have ex-racers (who often come with severe behavioural problems due to abuse during their racing days) and if you have the time and energy, they are definitely amazing dogs who will love you and who have massively cat-like personalities.

3 other things:

1. I second the idea that cat allergies can be overcome by acclimatising yourself, I'm allergic to house dust but never my own;

2. be aware that every bit of love, joy and affection you get from a pet will be equalled by the grief (and often baseless guilt) you'll inevitably feel when they die, often unexpectedly or after an illness that's devastating to witness, as your little friend suffers in wordless misery and bewilderment;

3. don't buy from breeders - 7 million or so domestic pets are put to sleep in America alone each year, because greedy people over-breed while good animals, dogs, cats, rabbits, all kinds, are turfed out of their homes to a speedy death at the hands of strangers.

Really consider how much you're willing to take on, in terms of commitment, and emotional investment - I love my dogs (past & present) more than anything, and they've enriched my life and made me a better person, but if I'd known beforehand exactly how much grief, expense, hassle and worry they'd cause me, I would have seriously reconsidered the decision to adopt them.

Yes, though I prefer to display my dog poop on small gold tiles, plates and pillows rather dwarf the average canine stool....

They've obviously put a lot of thought into it, and it all goes well together, so yeah - not my style but it doesn't make my brain hurt or anything.

Wow, I have pieces that have travelled with me some 20 years, including a wooden crate that constantly meets new purposes, and other things I bought second-hand that must be at least 30 years old... I expect stuff to last, and while self-assembly can take a battering if you move, there are ways and means to protect it, like disassembly, or careful packing (and being strict with your movers).

It just never occurs to me that my furniture will cop out before I do, and I was always taught to respect furniture when I was a child: maybe people brought up to view it as acceptable collateral damage are the ones with the earth-destroying need for constant replacements?

Well the majority of comments here are an absolute pleasure to read, and restored my faith in humanity... and LOL @BornSlippy - priceless imagery there!

I respectfully beg to differ that these words come from "the right place" - unless someone has known issues that compromise their immune system (in which case blog posts would NOT be a premium source of advice) these tips are all utterly misguided, neurotic and even dangerous, both w/regards to superbugs and allergies, and the environment.

Just for one, I wash my hands every time I get back indoors (an old tip I picked up working on a cash till, to avoid transferring flubugs etc) and that would sometimes have me washing 5 or 6 hand towels A DAY - presumably in boiling bleach or something!

Crazy.

I know it's only more anecdotal stuff, but my ex was a born germophobe, and had food poisoning constantly, despite being a meticulous cook: I am a born slob who will occasionally re-use a plate I licked clean the night before (yeah, I know, gross!) but I've never had an upset stomach in my life (40 next year) even after eating some rather questionable foods, abroad and out of date etc...

I hate to be harsh, but this is NOT the standard of post we expect from Apartment Therapy at all, reminders about smoke alarms and so on would have been much more fitting and appropriate than this bizarre load of tosh.

Oooh, how odd - whatever happened to having a goodie drawer (or closet. Or attic....!) where you keep all your fun stuff? And why on earth would you want to both have things in plain view, AND hide them by concealing their form?

Sorry, I'm puzzled by that. ;)

Surely unwise if you have kids/nosy rellies who are apt to pick things up and start commenting on them!

teacupcake, if you see this, how did you handle the mantlepiece?

I've been thinking of doing something similar in my dining room/crafts & storage room, but I'm having problems reconciling my natural tendency to make the fireplace a focal point.

But the table (which is a big, old, dark wood thing - and perfect for the room) just looks wrong anywhere else in that room.
