I would try getting some foam-core boards and cutting them to the shape of the inside window sill. You could store them somewhere during the day and wedge them in the window at night.

Or maybe build a frame from light-weight wood slats to fit the window and staple to it some black-out cloth, just like prepping a canvas for painting. If it's light enough, you could tack up some small nails to hang the frames that wouldn't be too obvious in the daytime.

But if you have aluminum window frames, the magnet idea is great. Please share the pictures of what you use!

It looks pretty, but isn't this a big (or little) critter magnet?

I just moved a floor lamp into the kitchen and the warm, incandescent light makes a huge difference. Now it's so cozy to work on crafts on the kitchen table near the oven which I'm using a lot more lately.

I'd suggest shifting the focus from the living room into the kitchen for these dark months.

1) Bells. I lucked into a box of craft store bells one year and I've hung them up ever since.

2) Yarn. I use red and white for garlands and for tying on cinnamon sticks. I also use the same yarn to tie up the presents that sit underneath- it keeps it all coordinated.

I love all these ideas!

I've been trying to figure out how to do this in my bathroom. Unfortunately there are large "scribbles" of wallpaper glue on the ceiling that have been painted over many times now. Right ow it's very unsightly.
Any tips on what I can do?

I do that storage box idea, and it works wonders.
The box goes out of sight into the closet. When I need more storage space, I go through the box, just to make sure. Most times the entire contents go straight to GoodWill.

I have a few sets, all gathered from thrift stores.
I have never liked the flutes - they seemed designed for people with bobbed noses only.
I have no trouble with escaping bubbles using my vintage glasses. Maybe I just drink too quickly!

I do have pictures in glass frames in my closet. The problem is that although the wall space seems unused, I'd keep bumping them off when I'd pull down boxes from the top shelf.

Maybe gluing magazine photos to the wall would work better- can't knock those off!

There IS more out there than just MCM. There is a tendency to contribute negative comments when homes decorated in other styles are shown on AT. I doubt those offering these photos feel very encouraged, therefore MCM is featured a lot.

I try to comment when I see something I like, hoping to keep encouraging diversity here at my favorite design site.

I tried to go back to non-organic food, but every meal I made just tasted awful.

When I cook with organic ingredients, I throw away next to nothing. Older vegetables end up in soup or stew.
Definitely buy vegetables in season. Squash is really cheap right now and can be cooked so many different ways.

Luckily, here in San Francisco there are many more options for organic food than Whole Foods.

I covered my kitchen and bathroom cupboards with white contact paper. I couldn't get it to look good on the rounded wood trim, but it looks like its there for contrast.

Bonus: it makes the kitchen a LOT easier to clean.

Cliff's has a good assortment, and surprisingly so does Target.

I love the glass cupboard doors and the crisp white paint and that it still feels cozy. Such a nice mix of modern and classic elements.

Somehow, they packed a claw foot tub into the teeny tiny bathroom of my teeny tiny rental studio. And I am so so happy - seeing it was my "I'll take it!" moment.

With a small bookcase on top it could look like a hutch. The right proportions and the same coat of paint- no one would know they were separate pieces.

The couch in the first photo is absolutely gorgeous. Its so warm and inviting that it balances the cool colors nicely.

(Honestly, it's one of the most beautiful objects I've ever seen.)

I'm very worried about the amount of heat too.
The steam pipes run up the wall behind my radiator. I don't want to put holes in a wall full of pipes.
Plus the wall is super-hot even with my radiator turned off.

Are there any heat-resistant SURROUNDS for radiators?

Its a little too flat to work as a bear-skin rug.

I wouldn't mind a few of those blankets, though. Beautiful pattern.

Fantastic.
This sort of layering is very hard to do.
I bet the photos don't do it justice.
