We use mason jars with handles (boyfriend wanted them, but I also think they're cute). If we didn't have space I think I would hang them instead of stacking.

If you like the ones with handles, it would be relatively simple to make some sort of hook system (if you have the vertical space).

Good luck!

Slingshot.. seriously, I am sure you could get it with a slingshot and some gravel.

Gorgeous cozies! I've been planning to make some for my neighbourhood. Thanks for covering awesome craftiness AT.

Seaside - as a knitter, if you knit, you knit for who and what you want. Knitting is only worth doing if you will have fun.

If signpost cozies is what gets these knitters excited, so be it. Not everyone finds hats and scarves fun to knit, I would rather make a cash donation than knit acrylic scarves for the homeless.

Oooh I hate that. We have just the right amount now, luckily. We got them from our local transit lost and found sale.

It bothers me that every single store has taken it upon themselves to sell their own reusable bag, basically for the advertising benefits. Especially the large grocery stores. I mean, the mainstream emergence of reusable bags is great... but not if it means that we have created a whole new industry to consume from.

It would be nice if the bags sold in the grocery stores were at least made out a shipping byproduct. Maybe it would be an added reminder that our food travels and encourage people to buy local.

I just got a vintage Bernina 831 for Christmas and love it! My uncle cleaned the brushes on it for me and it works just fine. I do think that the older machines (if they are a good brand) are a great way to go.

Maybe find a local small machinery repair shop and see if they have any older machines?

Oooh! I have these! and the measuring spoons too. They were the first thing I bought when I moved out of my parents' house. Lee Valley has so many well made products, definitely built to last.

A recommendation.. although I suppose the lack of imperial measurements make them not as all-round useful in the US

We generally go about 4 weeks to accumulate enough to fill 1 small bag. But there are just 2 of us. We compost and recycle most of our waste.

We eat mostly organic. As students on a budget, sometimes there are trade-offs. We typically make exceptions when there is a local independently owned producer that is not organic, we choose to support them and encourage them to take steps towards becoming organic. Or for certain very expensive items that we use frequently (butter, cheese). We will also buy non-organic produce at the farmers market if there are no organic options at comparable quality.

When I get my first "real job" I will be prioritizing spending my money on organics, but will probably continue to buy some non-organics if it contributes to community businesses.

Oh and eating out? Pho doesn't count...

I have a cell for emergencies. But it stays turned off. We use our landline for everything. If our current cordless dies, I think I would get a second hand one.

We always get a real tree from a family owned farm. It stays up for 4 weeks or so, and gets composted at the end. I do think it is a green choice as long as you dispose of it properly and try to support your community. The smell can't be beat!

Ooooh, I'm with blackbird, nice linens.

Any chance someone knows where they are from or if someone made them? This might be enough to make me take up my sewing machine again.

I use second hand bags. I understand why the 'reusable plastic' ones are being marketed. However, I think it is a much sounder mindset to reuse someone's discard than to recycle plastic to make a new product.

I doubt the energy measurement would account for disposal of the bag once it is worn out. Plus who know where and under what conditions they are being made.

On a day to day basis I bike and take public transit... and when I travel I am either bussing or carpooling. If I weren't a student I would buy offsets for the occasional flight I take. Sadly, until I get a real job (with my environmental studies degree) purchasing carbon offsets isn't really in the budget.

As an alternative I spend time promoting responsible travel to others, and planting trees!

I always have at least one knitting project with me for those runway waits and other downtime. Also a good book, my first aid kit, and an empty water bottle are key. If there is room, I bring my digital SLR in its pelican case.

snacks!
