Most of the time, I am a big supporter of buying one high-quality, handcrafted, environmentally-concious (or as many of those things as I can get) item over a series of cheap and bound-to-break, yet affordable and stylish items. However, for me, dinner plates are one of the very few exceptions. Dinner plates break. I have butterfingers. It's inevitable. It's going to happen. While I know that I'm not likely to snap a swanky, well-crafted bed in half, it takes just one slip of the hand to disintegrate an oft-handled ceramic piece. Thus, for this reason, dinner dishes are one of the few things I will probably always buy cheap, manufactured, and mass-marketed. Because as long as I'm replacing plates, I'd rather replace $3 ones instead of $33 ones. On Buying Sustainable Plates … Slowly | Apartment Therapy Re-Nest |

The more practical (probably greener) solution is to rub banana peels on your houseplants. If they're fake plants (and I assume real plants too) it makes them shiny. If they're real plants, it gives the plant nutrients. Houseplant Cleaning | Apartment Therapy San Francisco |

Maybe try batiking. It involves using a tool (although you may not need it) to apply hot wax to the white rug where you want the design to be. Then, let the fabric soak in your dye and it will dye everything except where the wax is. Tips for Stenciling an IKEA Rug? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy San Francisco |

I have recently become obsessed with the home reno blog Brick City Love. She uses orange as an accent color in her romantic modern-meets-traditional bedroom. It's so unexpected and totally beautiful. I never would have thought to combine bright orange pillows with such a traditional headboard, but it looks great! Plus, she painted her radiator bright orange. How awesome is that? This has always been my plan once I buy a house. However, as a renter who moves frequently, I find it relatively pointless to invest in good furniture now. Between the constant beating furniture gets when you move, and the unique characteristics and style of each apartment, getting nice furniture now seems like a waste of time/money/resources. I'd rather just wait until I know I'm going to live someplace for a long time. Use a 20-Year Plan to Build a Stable of Quality Furniture | Apartment Therapy San Francisco |

I've been thinking about this ever since I flipped through one of Jonathan Adler's books at Powell's. Since then, I've made an effort to find things that are completely outrageous, often in a funny way, and that are likely to start a conversation. How Do You Incorporate Fun? Growing up, my mom ALWAYS lit a candle in the bathroom when we were entertaining. She generally kept a big, heavy duty Yankee-like candle near the sink, and lit in after the bathroom had been thoroughly cleaned. It's pretty amazing what a difference it makes. My aunt did this. In her home, she has had my cousin's childhood artwork professionally framed. Now that my cousins are 18 and 14 years old, it's a beautiful sentimental touch. My mom's kitchen is orange, with a lavendar ceiling. Everyone in her conservative, Midwestern town thought she was crazy for doing it. But after she painted it, EVERYONE was talking about how great it looked! Apartment Therapy San Francisco | Orange Kitchens |
