Apartment Therapy New York | How To: Build a Simple Indoor Swing (for winter)
1/16/09 9:32 AM

From personal experience, I can attest to the fact that having an indoor swing for the winter is a fabulous idea. As long as it's *very* well secured.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in a house with a basement, and Dad put up a swing (from the exposed beams in the basement) for me -- it was great. (Now, when I think back, I'm glad I never swung too high, or fell off onto the concrete floor ... back then I just had fun.) (P.S. I didn't fully appreciate that house when I was a kid... how I'd love to have the large rooms and hardwood floors now!)

Curtis -- that would work for a window air conditioner, Kristy's (and mine) are built in to the wall. Take it out and you have way more problems than just a bit of a draft, you have a huge gaping hole in your wall!

Apartment Therapy Chicago | Good Questions: Blocking the Draft from the AC Unit?

I have a wooden box, which is covered with some sort of plastic (previous tenant had it made to fit the unit) that goes over the a/c on the outside, which helps, but even with that there's a draft. So this year I've bought some foamboard from the craft store, and I'm planning to make a cover to go over the inside part of the a/c... what I plan to do is to make kind of a box of strips of the foamboard (it's like poster board with thin foam between the pieces of poster board -- hope you know what I mean), and stick that to another piece of foamboard, and put the thing over the a/c. I'm going to put a nice piece of art paper over the foamboard, to make it match the wall color, more or less, and then prop pictures on the top of the "box" part, to make it look more decorative, and less weird. If I ever get it done, I'll post pics on my Flickr.

Hi, all! I guess I'm going to have to take an Incomplete grade on this Cure... Life has a way of throwing unexpected things in one's way. My father (age 95) had a fall on Thursday, and broke his hip. He's just gone into the O.R. for what will likely have to be hip replacement surgery. So between going back and forth to the hospital, and helping my 87 year old mother out at home (I'm staying with her right now), curing my apartment has gone fairly far down my list of priorities.

I'll check in when I can to see how the rest of you are doing. Y'all take care and have fun!

Raikenn's spaces are always so beautiful!

As I scrolled down, and saw the top of that mantle, I thought, "Hey! That's lorijo's fireplace!" and I was right. Looks great, lorijo!

I finally finished cleaning the kitchen, including cleaning the fridge within an inch of its life. Now I just have the cupboard beautification to do (and I've found some red paper, so I can get on with that).

In the summer, I finally hit on the right configuration for my landing strip (pictures will be uploaded this evening, or tomorrow evening), so I can keep working on the kitchen this week.

Everyone's doing such great work!

Basically I didn't get anything done since last Friday (until this evening, when I started on the kitchen). First my mother was ill, then I was a little under the weather while still helping my mother out (she's 87), and I now have some catching up to do!

I've been slowed down on my putting-red-paper-in-the-kitchen-cupboards project -- I was expecting to just waltz into any card store and pick up a roll or two of bright red wrapping paper, but they don't have their Christmas stuff out yet (come on, store people, it's nearly Hallowe'en, where's the Christmas stuff??? j/k) so I have to wait until I can get some paper. In the meantime I'm planning the rearranging of the cupboards, and cleaning what needs to be cleaned in the kitchen.

Not having a digital camera is really frustrating at Cure Time!

Yay! Another Canadian! Hi, Jenny!

Floors will get their due this weekend. Why do I always procrastinate about doing the floors? It's not that onerous a job, it's not that big an apartment... but I put it off, and put it off.

I've been tidying this week. The place is looking better! Just knowing the community is here doing the same things seems to be great motivation for me. Thanks, all!

Well done, Mrs.Mack! It's amazing how quickly things disappear sometimes.

I've just put together a "before" set on Flickr -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/84796198@N00/sets/72157608009663793/

and I've blogged my answers to last week's Cure Interview -- http://serenityathome.blogspot.com/2008/10/at-rides-again.html

I'm taking an unused phone up to my parents' apartment (they live in another apartment in the same building as I do, they're 95 and 87 years of age) -- can that count as my "one thing" to get rid of this week? Most of my decluttering was done in previous Cures (except for the mounds of paper that have built up... I'm going to be doing a lot of shredding.) My mother has decided it's time for her to do some major decluttering, and I've offered to store a lot of china and whatnot in my unused kitchen cupboards (I was *very* ruthless when I did my kitchen decluttering), so I'll actually be adding stuff to my apartment rather than taking away, but it would have to be done sometime, might as well be now.

MayaLau -- those murals are gorgeous!

I'm doing a Cure Lite (although I haven't formally "signed up"). I've just blogged my answers to the Cure Interview in a very long blog post at http://serenityathome.blogspot.com/2008/10/at-rides-again.html

I'm on about my sixth cure, some official ones, a couple done on my own, and so I was very interested to discover new things when I did the Interview yet again. Blogging it, rather than just doing it in the spaces in the book, allowed me to be more reflective, and I've realized some things I need to work on that I hadn't thought of before!

Hi, Nina79 and Gaditana -- I think in the past, European Curers have participated in the NY group, as the "closest" to Europe (still pretty far away, though, and likely different issues/concerns)...

w00t for Pixie! Thank you so much for speaking up about the Cure seeming to be sort of shunted to the side in favor of other things. It used to be a more central part of AT -- on the old site it was possible to get to the cure posts easily from the Book link on the sidebar.

Where is everybody?

and imwalken, the cure is easier with the book, but next week when they start posting instructions, you'll be able to follow along (if you can find the posts from the first couple of cures in the archive, they'll give you a good idea of what is contained in the first part of the book.)

I'll just be doing a Mini Cure this time, a sort of "Tying Up Loose Ends" Cure. After participating in so many cures, I don't have a lot left to do, especially since I accomplished quite a bit since the Spring Cure. I will use the extra impetus of the Cure to get my act together and actually *finish* a few things. I was hoping to do a One Room Rescue on the Living Room, but that isn't possible just now, so I'll just do a bit here and a bit there. I'll post some before pics to add to my Spring Cure pics (things have changed in the bedroom and living room since then, although the "after" of the writing room is the "before" of this Cure -- it just needs lighting).

I won't be formally signing up, but I'll be doing a bit, and will post "after" pics in the appropriate weeks.

Have fun, everyone!

Having never watched "Friends", I didn't pick up any vibes the way the first three commenters did -- I just knew I liked it.

Why is it that if something recalls (for some) a date in recent history, it is bad, bad, bad; but if it makes them think of the 50s and 60s (i.e. mid-century modern) it is wonderful?

A beautiful piece of furniture should be allowed to be a beautiful piece of furniture, no matter what decade it may call to mind.

Love the souvenir-tray table -- that stylized beaver was called "Amik", and he was the mascot of the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

As I was buying my copy of this issue, the cashier said, "I think this is the most beautiful bedroom I've ever seen" (the Muskoka bedroom is featured on the cover). It's incredibly peaceful-looking, for sure, and they have a wonderful lake view out their bedroom window...

Janel -- there's still an instance of "Muskoga" in the post. (I worked as a proofreader one summer, and it spoiled me for life.)

Love it! Jewelry as art. I don't find it too busy, just intriguing, looking at the different pieces.

Love the fabric on the chair in the first pic, but what I REALLY love is the miniature drafting table, chair, and lamp on display in the first pic. It is fantastic!

My drawer dividers don't look all that special, but they work, and they're nearly the same depth as the drawers -- I use empty tissue boxes. They're all the same size, and they're cheap, and they work.
