This is not humane and totally off the wall, but hey, it worked for my parents and is cheap. Apartment Therapy Los Angeles | Getting Rid of Pocket Gophers |

I'm embarrassed to ask this, but I can't figure it out and would really like to know. Dried beans. They are cheaper, they have less packaging, and you can get more varieties. But how do I cook them so they're not, for lack of a better word, crunchy? Apparently soaking for 12 hours and then cooking for four just isn't enough. What am I missing? My partner and I have integrated boxed wine into our household in addition to the nice bottles that we keep on hand for special occasions. The quality that we get is ~fine~ and we would definitely pay more for better quality if we could get it. The box is wonderful for cooking, and to have a single glass here and there. My partner and I are fig thieves. We have good friends with a fig grove that they don't have much interest in. Every August we head down to the grove and pick as many as we can, leaving some for the bears of course, and then spend the next week giving them away and eating nothing but figs. Third-party CO2 offset services are a bandaid that don't put enough pressure on the offenders. Airlines, bus lines, etc should be upgrading their fleets to ultimately eliminate carbon waste. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Survey: Do You Offset Your Travel? |

Toothbrushes, on the other hand...has anyone found an eco-friendly toothbrush that is as effective as the high-tech commercial brands? We've tried several and they seem to wear out fast and don't have the reach. I keep waiting for The Ultimate Toothbrush, but it just hasn't come my way up here in Canada. Snickidy: Partner has same problem with dandruff in our house. Hairstylist said step 1 is identify what is clogging pores causing skin to flake so it can "breathe." For products one possibility is Hauschka's Neem Hair Oil. Home remedy: try a tea of either sweetgrass or rosemary, just boil these botanicals in water and use as a hair rinse, the Dene say it helps with greys, too! Just last week we noticed that Tom's Toothpaste contains sodium lauryl sulfate, a no-no in our house. We are searching for a better alternative if anyone has suggestions. Apartment Therapy Re-Nest | Greening Our Habits: Tom's of Maine Toothpaste |

Libraries aren't just green because you re-use books. They're also green because they are one of the few public[ly funded] spaces where a community can gather to exchange ideas and simply hang out in a safe, positive environment that actually encourages intellectual curiosity. They are green because people who can't afford to buy books, rent videos, go to lectures, or have a computer at home to get online have access to an unlimited source of information, including experts on hand whose job it is to help find that information. For their free, community-based problem solving potential alone, libraries are green. And if smart, vocal people start using libraries more, they'll get more and better funding, which will help them to keep their collections in better, and hopefully germ-free, condition.
